An interesting friend.........

Postby Saracenman » Wed Sep 23, 2009 6:36 pm

i received an interesting and uplifting email from my retired Brigadier friend (who moves in some astonishing circles) the other day, as follows:

[Mrs. Brigadier] staged one of her smart double-barrelled luncheon parties yesterday. One of the guests was our neighbour ****, unaccompanied by her husband, who, though perfectly normal and pleasant in every other way, has a passion for motor cars - apparently there was something more interesting than our party going on at Goodwood.
[She] arrived full of the news that her husband had just rung her in an excited, indeed emotional state, to say that there had been a Vulcan flight. Did I mention [her] surname? ............... [The] grandfather invented aeroplanes or something, and his firm produced the Vulcan?? Anyway, [he] was very chuffed about it.

(typical Brigadier dry humour! =)) )

my Brigadier friend popped in today for a cuppa, bringing a postcard of thanks (for the nosh up) - this one...

Image

the description is as follows:
Alliott Verdon Roe by the AVRO Arches on Walthamstow Marshes preparing the AVROPLANE in 1909 for flight trials.

my friend's lunch guest's surname is Verdon Roe - her husband is none other than the grandson of A V Roe! ;)

interesting! my mind is now going at 200mph to see if i can develop 'things' for 558's benefit :D

anyway back on topic - is SM inferring by the title of this thread that he doesn't find his friends on here interesting? :(

I believe SM's friend's friend is Eric Verdon-Roe: the chap on the left in these pictures:

Image

Image

All 4 of them are direct descendents of Alliot Verdon-Roe: they were at Goodwood (where Bobby Verdon-Roe was racing) and Ian Glasse invited them across to the Vulcan Village, where they spent 10-15min chatting, signing the Avro Vulcan publicity poster you can see in the photo and buying a few things! They are hugely proud, impressed, appreciative and supportive of what the Club and Trust are doing and are in contact with both Robert Pleming and Michael Trotter.

Cheers,

i wasn't aware, until now, that the AVRs were already associated with VTS - hurrah! :ymapplause:

it might make my 'wooing' considerably easier! the fact that it now seems that they are also my NEIGHBOURS........ :D
