Dan, you might not want to hear what Doug had to say about the Packard engines, at least the first batch. He wasn't exactly overjoyed.

That version of the Packard Merlin was specifically
for the Mk. XVI Spitfire, so I'm not surprised there
might have been some teething problems.....

Ask Doug next time how things worked-out once
they got rolling, okay?

If he complains about high-altitude performance,
well, this Mk. of Spitfire was intended for low to
mid-altitude operations, anyway!

Thanks;

Danf.

Sure, I'll ask him more about it next time. All he mentioned were some reliability issues that had him scared a couple times as well as others in his unit. I'll find out more specifics later.

Finally operational again.

Was hoping to be farther along by now but here it is so far:

Image

Like Dan said earlier, there's a lot of little changes between the model I had and the Mark 16.

A lot of the hard work is done now so hopefully it'll start to shape up soon. The paint job itself needs a lot of work as the cammo pattern is wrong and it needs a lot of wear and hard use put in.

Hope everyone here had a great holiday!!

I like the angle you've chosen, Len........

There's something about it I can't quite
figger out, but it really WORKS!

I'd also like to say I'm sorry you are
selling that B-I-G original, especially
after all the time and thought and
tribulation that went into it :((

Oh, and Happy New Year, Yerself! :D

Here's an update on this one. Links below are a bit higher res.

The next step will be to add some dirt and scratches. Right now the Spitfire is right off the showroom floor :)

Comments welcome of course.

Well, I LOOKED at all the views and
couldn't find anything that didn't look
better-than-right :D

...except, as you mention, the ageing
of the Spit....

You know I'd tell you if something was
askew, right?

It is the angles you've chosen that make
it good -- hard to complain given that
premise.......

Let me look at it a few more times and I
may add a comment or two :D

Thanks Dan!

I have one question for anyone who might know. Some photos of the Mark XVI have a mirror above the canopy and some don't. I don't know if war time aircraft should have one or not. Maybe some pilots took them off?

Anyone know?

Thanks! Sadly, I just tried to call the pilot with a few questions and he's in the hospital. I'm hoping he recovers! At this age, one never knows when they're going to call it a life. He seemed to be in such great shape just a few weeks ago.

Here's the latest. I think it's about done (I hope) unless someone spots something that needs changing :) I will be seeing the pilot next week to have him check over a print test, he seems to be recovering OK.

OKAY!

This just from a brief look.........

1) I think the Spit needs to be a little more
beat-up and not in quite so sharp a focus....

2) By the same token, I think the German
fighter needs to be slightly sharper....

The Spit is so perfect, it loses some sense of
motion and looks to be suspended in the air....

I, as the viewer, want to see more of what's
going on with the ME.....

Bear in mind this was from an initial look
and is totally subjective on my part.

All-in-all, though, still GREAT!

Yup I also agree - not sure if it's a little too clean or needs a little motion blur

It does look good, but, I think Danf is right. A bit more movement on the spit and it would be perfect!!

Not sure I can explain what I mean, but I don't think the Spit is pointing in the right direction.

The smoke would be relatively static compared to the speed of the aircraft, so the Spit caused the damage by shooting where the first smoke is, not where the ME109 is now.

As painted, the hit was actually caused by the Spit's starboard wing man, who is out of picture.
