The last Buccaneer display

Postby MOD » Thu Dec 22, 2011 5:52 pm

Apologies if you have seen this - but I have only just found it. :(

The Blackburn Buccaneer is one of my all time favourite 'Iconic aircraft'. As a young tyke I got to sit in one of the very early SI's at Brough during a families Open Day.. My elder cousin was an apprentice there and he was working on them.
My mother had also worked in the Skunk works during WWII and my final visit there was in 1993 when BAe Brough handed over the Stringbag LS326 to the RNHF. I took my old man with me, as it was his 70th birthday, courtesy of Commander Vic Syrett and I got to introduce him to the Admiral from the RNHF Yeovilton over lunch.

It is really galling to think that BAe Brough is to close and all future Hawk work is stated to be going to HAL in India.

Blackburns started making aircraft here in 1916. :(

EDIT: Thanks Oli ;)

Amazing stuff - I would have loved to have lived back then. Stunning aircraft.

P.S. Bucc Pedant mode on - the early models were S1s not B1s ;) :p
Fly fast jets and/or C130s over my house please, I'm bored!

Lovely to see BUCCANEERS and nice to see them clean winged! :D

Thanks for giving that one a new lease of life Ian! :ymapplause:

Great video, like most old "British" jets, timeless, would still look good amongst the modern era machines.

I so agree Jim. If only the Buccaneer had received the upgrades that were proposed for it. :(

If its oil consumption rate could have been reduced, and/or Denis Healey hadn't scrapped our, conventional, aircraft carriers, the Falklands War might never have happened. There is no way Galtieri and Co would have even considered trying to annexe the Falklands if we still had proper carriers carrying Buccs and F4s.

Now that we don't have any aircraft carriers or any aircraft capable of reaching the Falklands, ( the Typhoons were taken there in the hold of a Russian An-124 )

I won't even mention in-flight refuelling :-o It would be down to 7 VC10s :-o

The Argie politicians are , once again, trying to divert attention away from their incompetence by threatening the Falklands. Their 'woman' in charge really has it in for the Falklanders.

So what do we have that could reach the Falklands today? We have no carriers of any description. No Harriers. The Tiffies have to be air-freighted there by friendly Russian contractors :( We have no AEW capability - no Sentries or Nimrods !! No Vulcans, No F3 Tornados. Our Army , apparently, no longer officially qualifies as an ARMY, it is a Defence Force as it is too small.!

The Royal Navy would struggle to reach Normandy these days so the Falklands is well outside any of their Risk Scenarios. They can't even handle amateur Somali 'Pirates' without looking like rejects from a 'Carry On' film crew.

My Christmas and New Year message to the 'Bennies' is - learn Spanish.... pronto. ;) :D :D :D

Tongue firmly in cheek..... ;)

Ian, the esteemed J Clarkson Esquire has suggested a Nuclear Submarine should be sent to that part of the world, if that is not possible, just let the argies think one is patrolling their neibourhood! ;) ;) ;) :-o
