MK 10 Ejection seats

Postby Sploosher » Mon Nov 21, 2011 10:30 pm

Apart from the 3 jest that we know about that use these seats, what ex service jets that still fly use them?

Not knowing how old these seats are, I would guess that Hunters, Vampires, Venoms etc use an earlier model... :D

The reason why I ask is because I heard on `Look North` that the CAA has stopped any civvy aircraft with these seats in from flying until further notice.........

The Shackle connections through the scissors to the drogue are thought to be the problem and the CAA has issued an instruction to check all of them!

Does this indicate that they have decided on the cause of the accident(s)?

No just one part!

NOT the cause, but one of the contributory factors!

And from the Lincolnshire Echo;

PLEASE NOTE;

I don't think anybody was offended Nick and I know that wouldn't have been your intention - rest assured if I had thought that I would have removed it for you. Without knowing all the available facts it is very hard to deduce any plausable explanation of why/what happened.

I am sure that all involved were nothing less than professional and we will just have to wait for the official findings.

You have to know that they're just
erring on the cautious side, as they
ought to do until everything gets
sorted out.........

Both our countries share the distinction
of having GREAT agencies to deal with
these sad events when they occur......

The whole world looks to US when the
unspeakable happens, regardless of what
the French have to say about it.......

Agree wholeheartedly with all of that, D4th. :ymapplause:

However, I would like to see the same requirement for an interim report within one month, which already applies to the civilian agencies, also applied to the military. I think that would reduce the idle and uninformed speculation which happens at present.

True, but clearly there are "Enthusiasts" out there who don't know better. I just think it would help (not cure, just help) if the known facts were made public more promptly.

It certainly helps with civilian incidents, although nothing will stop the totally idiotic speculator "experts". ~x(

Meaning
A small amount of knowledge can mislead people into thinking that they are more expert than they really are.

Origin
'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing' and 'a little learning is a dangerous thing' have been used synonymously since the 18th century.

The 'a little learning' version is widely attributed to Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744). It is found in An Essay on Criticism, 1709, and I can find no earlier example of the expression in print:

A little learning is a dangerous thing;
drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring:
there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
and drinking largely sobers us again.

The similarity of the two phrases is demonstrated by what appears to be an impromptu coining of 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing' in a piece in The monthly miscellany; or Gentleman and Lady's Complete Magazine, Vol II, 1774, in which the writer misquoted Pope:

Mr. Pope says, very truly, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing."

Both Pope's original verse and the misquotation of it were predated by an anonymous author, signing himself 'A B', in the collection of letters published in 1698 as The mystery of phanaticism:

"Twas well observed by my Lord Bacon, That a little knowledge is apt to puff up, and make men giddy, but a greater share of it will set them right, and bring them to low and humble thoughts of themselves.

Again, there is a degree of misquotation here, as what 'my Lord Bacon', the English politician and philosopher Francis Bacon, Viscount St Alban, actually said, in The Essays: Of Atheism, 1601, was:

"A little philosophy inclineth man’s mind to atheism; but depth in philosophy bringeth men’s minds about to religion."

So, who coined the phrase? It appears to have been a group effort. Bacon can be credited with the idea, Pope with the 'learning' version and the mysterious 'A B' with the 'knowledge' version.
