Please bear with a thicko - I haven't worked in the aero industry. I understand IFR & VFR and at the moment 558 is authorised for VFR. Now, who would decide to (worst case) take the authorisation away if she had landed 15 mins. later. I know it's the CAA ultimately. but how would they decide?
1. Are sunrise/set times published for pilots and are they more accurate than those for civvies?
2. Would local conditions influence i.e. no cloud stays lighter for longer, cloudy gets darker earlier?
3. I suppose logs are randomly checked by the CAA?
4. Would ATC know that a plane is only VFR, and would they grass them to the CAA?

Thanks.

Second thicko here! :D

Following on from the above, I would have thought that it was the crew (in particular the Captain) who would be in the metaphorical firing line for any transgressions, not the aircraft's operating company / holder of the certification?

Can "sort of" answer no 1: VFR first take off is 30mins before sunrise and last landing is 30mins after sunset - times are published but wouldn't think this is anymore accurate than those published elsewhere- Unless a pilot has a current night rating plus an aircraft equipped for night flight and an airfield with appropriate lighting.

The captain is responsible for all decisions.

ATC (in general) won't necessarily know if the flight is VFR/IFR - responsibility still with captain.

Local conditions do make a big difference to landing VFR close to the first take off last landing times but it doesn't change the rules. Can speak from experience here - once tried to land a glider with a few minutes to spare from last landing, on a cloudy evening - I absolutely DUMPED it - thought I was lower than I actually was and stalled in from a couple of feet.......ouch. :p No damage - just a red face :ymblushing:

yep it would have been DT who would have had a one sided interview with the CAA & I can assure you he would NEVER have put his professional reputation on the line for anyone no matter how soft the bollocking would have been! :))

Sooty

One Olympus 301 has twice the power of a complete F1 starting grid.
XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.
