RAF signs contract for seventh C 17

Postby Mackrick » Tue Jan 05, 2010 8:15 pm

The Royal Air Force has signed a contract for the seventh C17 aircraft the UK Ministry of Defence announced Tuesday. The new strategic transport aircraft will add to a fleet that has seen heavy usage during recent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Boeing C17 Globemaster can operate in both strategic and tactical roles, combining trans-continental range with the ability to operate from short runways under basic conditions.
The C17’s huge capacity enables carriage of loads such as a Chinook helicopter or thirteen Land Rovers, or mixed freight loads of up to 160,000 lbs. The new C17 aircraft will join the rest of the fleet at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire when it enters service with the RAF in March 2011 after it has been fitted with self-protection measures.
This additional C17 is part of the £900 million package of enhancements for operations over the next three years announced by the Defence Secretary, Bob Ainsworth, last week.
“Afghanistan remains our top priority and this extra C17 represents a major contribution to the strategic airlift directly supporting our troops in Afghanistan. Since its entry into service in 2001, the UK’s C17 fleet has provided outstanding performance in RAF service in support of operations, humanitarian relief and routine tasks. The additional aircraft will allow our strategic transport capacity to be expanded during a period of intensive coalition operations”, said Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth.
Officer Commanding 99 Squadron, Wing Commander Simon Edwards, said that the operational record of the C 17 “ is unsurpassed. The current fleet of six aircraft delivers an incredible capability to our deployed forces and the announcement of a seventh aircraft will mean a great deal not only to the RAF but to the soldiers on the front line. There is no better way – and often no other way – to get vital equipment such as helicopters and large vehicles, such as Mastiff, where they are needed and when they are needed”
Six RAF C17s are operated by 99 Squadron from their base at RAF Brize Norton on Oxfordshire. Since the first aircraft was delivered in 2001, the RAF C17 fleet has flown well over 50,000 hours, largely in support of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also including humanitarian relief work in South-East Asia and Pakistan. sadly most of their recent use seems to be bringing wooden boxes back to Blighty :(

Mackrick - you think this is an indicator that the RAF won't be buying A400M?

That was my thinking too! Given the short field performance of the larger capacity C17 combined with the Hercules fleet, the A400M's not looking likely (or needed) IMO.

An official opinion I can't give SM .... a personal one though is different. Don't see why we need the A400M. Another C17 to make 8 and a few more proven C130J's would be just the ticket.

One of the six was in the skies over Cornwall today - didn't see it myself but it was well reported on Radio Crimp ....

Apparently it was seen over Helston and then over St Mawgan later - no landings reported - but Mawgan is big enough - rumour has it there were Seakings on board - perhaps they were off to the scrap yard :)) :))

It's caused quite a stir down here as all we normally see are loads of cabs and the occasional FRADU Black Hawk pair tooing and froing from channel operations playing with Her Majesty's ships :D

Edit - someone took a picture of it
I first noticed this plane way over towards the North Coast as we were bird watching. a short while later it came over Penzance and straight past us & onwards to Perranuthnoe

Image

Looks like its very 'dirty' and ready to land somewhere - can only be Culdrose or Mawgan.

Having been posted in Cornwall in my RAF days - it doesn't take much to get the Cornish going regarding strange flying things in the sky !

I think they still put bread out for any passing helicopter... ;)

Its funny that you said about St Mawgan being big enough.

Did you see the 'exercise' in short field landings the RAF undertook last year (I think). Simple, the USAF gave away an MH53, at Brize Norton. RAF delivered it to RAF Cosford - uber short runway. No problems. Unload, turn around shoot on out. Quite a sight I was led to beleive. And it had none of the snags that a certain Tin Triangle had on landing at Cosford. :)

Normally means any stickyouty bits are sticking out eg; air-brakes out or undercarriage/flaps extended as tho' it's in the landing configuration. Otherwise not clean or streamlined.

I think that what SF is referring too.
