They were great! Love the black and white footage. I often wonder how all you old folk told things apart before colours were invented. :D

Cracking find Andy, a great way to pass a spare 20 minutes

I'd not seen those either - superb find 320 :ymapplause:

there's NOTHING that can beat that Lightning takeoff! tell me, what was the reason behind taking off, raising u/c, then flying level along the runway for a while before pulling up into that incredible climb? why the level flight bit? :-??

sm

incidentally, here are the other six parts of the whole programme........

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5
in 320's post above

Part 6
in 320's post above

Part 7

Part 8 - last one

I'll be watching them ALL later! :D

i was thinking more along the lines of tarmac conservation - i.e. not melting it in the middle of the runway! =))

SM, sorry for the delay, Gully has it spot on ;)

Gear has to up by 240knts max, as the nose leg wont operate past that as it goes forward not backwards, but at 240 knots if the nose is pulled up sharish there is a very real risk of 'sinking back on' (which did happen), as a stall condition can happen, it was SOP to get some more speed up (350-400knts) before pulling into the vertical.

This caught the early Lightning pliots out as well as they would be super sonic in the climb before they had time to think about canceling the burners, staggering performance for its day, thats why I love em ;)

In all my time watching Lightnings vertical pull ups were semi rare really, fuel, 'G' and FI were being watched, they would normally use reheat for the take off run and lift off, then cancel the the bunrers, hold off and go into a 30 -40 degree climbing turn

The series of clips is cracking, been watching them all evening ;)

thanks 320. what you said about the pilot passing M1 if the reheats weren't cancelled is supported by one of the pilots in those clips you posted - he said, after ten hours in the sim, most Lightning jockeys would hit M1 on their first 'real' climb :ymapplause:

i can easily see why you love 'em so much - me too if I'm honest. i like the current line about the RAF's new hot-ship, the Typhoon: "The best fighter the RAF have had since they lost the Lightning"

i think that says an AWFUL lot more about how incredible the Lightning was 'back then', rather than the Typhoon is now! :-@

Nice to see real old Harriers attacking tanks in the last clip, even something for S.M. with the Saladins and some old tanks and SPGs!
