This has been on the cards for sometime now. But having read the pprune thread I would like to add that there are regular safety case meetings to discuss the VC10. The future as a tanker is for the short term still going to continue. As for the passenger role there are other options as has been discussed. Hopefully an update on this will come sometime this week.

This has been on the cards for sometime but its come rather sooner than anyone expected!

The VC10 is a safe aircraft to fly in, that i have NO doubt. But by todays standards the equipment on board is dated and any major upgrade is not and sadly never will be financally worth it to the been counters in ~Whitehall :(

Mister Eames;

I was a 19 year old college student (almost 20)
and I had spent December 1970 through January
1971 in Holland working and "studying".

Returning to Murka (Boston) from Schipol on
a very shiney new PanAm 747 (steerage class),
during the climb out headed west, the #3 engine
went BANG (!) and we proceeded to land at LHR.
The higher-class passengers were all accommodated
on another PanAm 747, but the lowlier pax (to
include me...) became problematic for the Limey
employees of this Legendary Airline.

In my case, I have always strived (striven?) to
dress well while traveling. Several 1st class seats
were available on a Boston-bound BOAC Super VC-10,
and I was one of just a few of the remaining group
of stranded pax that looked presentable and had
showered that day. Consequently, I got to return to
the USA in the very Lap of Luxury and attended to
by the most beeyouteeful stewardesses that BOAC
was capable of providing.

The rear two thirds of the aircraft were filled to
capacity by a church choir headed to Boston for a
recording session with the Boston Pops Orchestra,
and they sang all the way across the Atlantic. In
the sumptuous forward cabin, I was wined, dined
and catered to in nearly every imaginable way.

And THAT is how I flew on a VC-10 by accident.

Now, who was it that gave you the lousy Victor model?

FOR SHAAAAAME, Mister Eames....

I know we all make mistakes, BUT!

Oh, and of Course it counts, Gaz....

I flew on a Northeast Airlines DC-3 as an
infant (for free!), and I've always counted
it as my first.

VC-10 is a pretty good way to get started!
