How many Public supporters (not donators or members of the trust) of XH558 are actually aware of the issues most of us have with the trust? I'd bet this would be less than 5%

While I take into account all of the issues we have with Management, I would still donate IF I COULD AFFORD TO and I'm sure this is the case with the majority of supporters who still want her in the air. If I could, I would act for the now, not for the consequences that will follow.

My personal example:
I'm a football fan and sadly at this time support Liverpool........ :ymblushing: . I am angry with what the current owners are doing (or not doing) but it doesn't stop me buying merchandise or going to a game when I can. Currently I won't do any of the above for the same reason as not donating to the appeal, not because I'm against the management.

The sad reality is 558 is sat in a hangar, the display season is a long way off and for the majority of the public it is a case of 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind'. Funding is going to be hard to find as long as the public cannot see Her.

The biggest problem is the majority of people just don't have any spare cash to thrown around these days! For the Vulcan it's not only that but it's a fact of "will it really make a difference". If you stick a fiver in an NSPCC bucket you know it's going to make a difference immediately as it' not essentially part of a bigger picture, a fiver in the VTTS bucket, well, it might make a difference but in reality it probably won't.

I for one have had to cancel 3 direct debits for charity and yes one of them is VTTS. I can't afford it, sorry!

I did however buy Vulcan Ventures on Xmas Day through the eBay shop ;)

Hi,

Regarding the fact that it is quoted that an estimated 3,000,000 people have seen 558
last year, surely an idea would be to advertise for those people to donate £1 each to the fund
for having had the pleasure of seeing 558 airborne.

If only 1/3 donated that would be £1,000,000!

As you say having 558 locked away in a hangar, the public forget about it!

I saw suggestions about providing XM655 with cover, but one thing that was
brought up was that it then wouldn't be visible.

The funding push really ought to be DURING the flying season not during the 'closed' season.

Getting there is a bit like when you become self employed...........
IR want your tax for your 1st year of trading PLUS 50% of what you have just paid in advance for next years tax bill.

The problem we have is that we are perpetually playing catchup.

IF we can get one season ahead of 'ourselves' then life becomes more manageable as the 'push' can be made while there is money in the bank so that all the winter servicing etc can be achieved ready for the start of the season.

Hope that made some sort of sense, I'm on the wrong end of a bottle of red......... ;) ;) ;) ;)

Totally agree! So do many others and moves were made in 2009 to do just that. However, not everyone was in agreement...

Allthough hindsight can be a wonderful tool for preventative action to stop something happening or as an improvement tool, if someone in the past had the foresight to highlight that something could be done to prevent an occurrence or improve the process and was ignored, it then becomes a 'told you so' moment not a hindsight one ;)

Note:
For the purposes of this thread this is a light hearted comment not a dig at anyone or to start any heated discussions, though I have used this in work once or twice as a quality observation post a Human Factors investigation. :D

The latest update is on the website, and donations have slowed to a trickle.

At this rate, they'll reach the £800,000 target about the end of June.

Problem is, that's June 2011.

New Year Message and 50th Birthday Appeal Update

10th January 2010

Dear Supporters,

Firstly, I hope all of you had a good Christmas break and, on behalf of everyone at VTST, I wish you all the very best for 2010.

The message I have today is addressed to you, the “XH558 Activists”. I hope I am right in assuming that everyone who reads these newsletters is fully supportive of seeing XH558 continue to fly, and that each, in his or her own way, is committed to helping.

Your help is the past has been the reason why XH558 returned to flight, and entertained and inspired so many people over the last couple of years. Without you, and specifically your donations, this would never have happened.

Looking forward, we continue to face huge challenges. Our costs have increased, albeit hopefully temporarily, but the economy is in dire straits. I have just read a newspaper article forecasting that the impact of the recession on ordinary people really hasn’t been felt yet, and that things will get yet more painful in 2010.

In March 2009, after we reached our £1million Pledge target, I’m on record as saying: “We know that VTST needs to change, to adopt a new business model, that will ensure we don’t need to go through this all again next year, and also to have a chance of weathering poor economic conditions.”

Changes there have been: we have chopped costs wherever we can, but given what we do and how we have to do it, there is a limit to how much cost we can take out of the organisation. One example: with the business now based at Hinckley, and with XH558 at RAF Lyneham, we have saved over £10,000 per month in rental costs. We continue to focus on cost reduction, but there will always be surprises, so a large contingency element is vital.

We have increased our airshow revenues, through a combination of charging a higher average appearance fee and through a new “regional sponsorship” revenue stream. For example, XH558’s appearance at Whitehaven was sponsored by BNFL Sellafield.

We have revamped our merchandising, with the objective of substantially increasing the income from this source. A new online store will be launched on 1st February, with all profits now coming back to us. The Commercial Partnership Programme for small businesses is proving slowly successful, but corporate sponsorship in significant amounts continues to elude us due to the economic conditions, despite a very attractive offering.

But despite our best efforts, “fundraising” in all its forms remains our largest and most important revenue stream.

Since the end of the successful 2009 display season, our plan for fundraising is based on attracting large numbers of new supporters, principally from those 2.5 million who were thrilled by XH558 last summer.

Our key question to them is “Would you like to see XH558 continue to fly, so that she can entertain you and others in years to come?”. If you, as I have done, ask anyone who saw XH558 last summer this question, the answer is an emphatic “Yes!”. “Will you help by making a donation?”; “I didn’t know how to.” – is the way the conversation usually goes.

We have had no success at getting our message to this much bigger audience through the national media, even though we have tried every route we can think of, short of a national advertising campaign, which although costly, is under consideration. The problem is that we are no longer newsworthy – it’s old news, we did it, we got the Vulcan flying again!

This is where we now need you, as our loyal “XH558 Activists”, to help, principally because I believe we now have exhausted the realistic capability of our most loyal supporters to continue to fund XH558’s operation.

We need a National Campaign to keep XH558 funded, and whilst we talk to those who have been successful in setting up such a campaign, the only way we will do this is if sufficient numbers of people make a sufficiently big noise – this is where we need to have your help.

Very much our friendliest national newspaper has been the Mail on Sunday – you may recall the excellent coverage XH558 has received over the last year. But even the Mail on Sunday has admitted that there is currently no significant “hook” on which to hang a story.

This is where you come in. As a call to action, I ask everyone who is reading this message to email or write to the Mail on Sunday to ask them to take the lead in a National Campaign to keep XH558 flying, not only for this year but right the way through to Her Majesty the Queen’s – and the Vulcan’s – Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

If you can get your friends and family to email or write, the more the better! If enough people ask for a National Campaign, this must surely stand a better chance of success.

Please email:

Or write to:

Turning now to XH558’s current 50th Birthday Appeal, as expected, the donations to the Appeal tailed off in the run-up to Christmas, undoubtedly due for the most part to the inevitable expense at this time of year.

The Appeal now stands at just over £175,000 - a very positive result, yet there is still a long way to go for XH558 to be secure for another season.

January is a critical month for us, because to keep on track to fly XH558 in late Spring, we need to move forward on the Winter engineering programme. Despite not quite reaching the target of £200,000 for the end of December, we have decided to authorise Marshall Aerospace to start the lead-in work package, planning and design office activities, and this will mean paying them a substantial amount of cash up-front from the money raised so far.

Just this work alone will seriously dent our cash-flow as we wrestle to make the best use of the money you have donated to us, especially since the National Campaign could require substantial funding itself.

With this in mind, we wish to start calling in the first batch of pledges now from those who can afford it this month; we will send out letters very soon to those who indicated that they could honour their pledges in February.

Any pledges redeemed now will be put to good use not only in moving the Winter engineering programme forward, but also leveraging greater exposure and hence giving XH558 a better chance of success. The Vulcan to the Sky Supporter’s Club have also indicated a budget that might be made available for direct advertising of the campaign, so when added to the pledges, this could make a very significant difference.

If in these difficult times you are able to make a further donation, not only will it help the now-started Winter engineering programme along, it will help us engage the wider public - perhaps now the only realistic way to ensure our cause is successful. You, our supporters, can really make the difference…

Over the next two weeks or so, little work will be done on the aircraft herself, but our engineering team will be busy on preparatory activities, housekeeping, paperwork audits and the regular anti-deterioration checks at both our new Hinckley site and in the hangar at RAF Lyneham.

For those of you thinking of visiting the AutoSport International show at the NEC at Birmingham from 14th – 17th January, I am delighted to let you that Vulcan to the Sky will once again have a stand. Members of our aircrew will be in attendance during the Saturday and Sunday to talk to those who visit.

We have triumphed before in the face of huge adversity, so I would ask you once again to do all you can over the next few weeks, be it a letter or email to the Mail on Sunday, a donation or the payment of your pledge. For the sake of all that XH558 means to the British people, we simply must not fail!

With best wishes,

Robert Pleming
Vulcan To The Sky Trust

PS: For anyone redeeming a Pledge: please mark your donation clearly as an honoured pledge, with your name and postcode to avoid subsequent reminders - thank you!

SO - let me get this right - one minute it's old news and not newsworthy and the MOS is not interested -
THEN we bombard an email address clearly intended for other purposes - clog it all up and get REALLY popular with the MOS ......and suddenly - because its yet another appeal for more money - it will be newsworthy and a story :-o :-o X( X( X( X(

So come on all you people who have been bled dry and who's friends, relations and neighbours are sick of the sight and sound of you bleating about an aeroplane which means very little to them - get your money out and save it now - whilst there's still time before the next crisis......

Sorry - not for me again people - let it go - its grown like topsy into a cash guzzling monster - time to put it to rest - regretful though it is.

This is all very regretful, and I really sympathise with the front line troops, but please get a grip on the way businesses are run. Look to the future, not the present. Finances should be sorted at least a year in advance. I want to see her fly, but the faithful can't be targetted again and again. Speculate to accumulate, as the saying goes. Advertise - run ads on cable /satellite TV - it's a charity, I'm sure they get good rates. All very sad. :(

Since staying with the project for all the reasons I have stated ad infinitum in the past, I would still disagree that it is time to call it a day and keep 558 on the ground, we have enough examples in museums and still two that can be seen running up and down a runway, do we need a third?

As an example of what is great about British engineering in both the design and getting it back in the air it is great and needs keeping there, but, and this is the bugger about it all, it is still the same people who have produced the money/media interest in the past and we cannot sustain it on our own and agree that to do a 'Sky' mass e-mail/letter swamping to the MoS, or any other paper/media outlet is not going to do the cause any favours.

Do I have any more suggestions now, no, can I put any more money in addition to what I allready give, no, can I help more by taking more time off and travelling further afield than Lincoln area, no, would I help more financially if I won a decent amount on the lottery, yes, so whats left.

So I am worn out with it all and just basically at my wits end to know what would be best all around and what else I could feasably do, though I am only a 'loyal 558 activist', not one of the 'most loyal supporters who have exhausted their realistic capability to continue to fund XH558’s operation', us few loyal 558 activists certainly cannot keep the funding going anymore realistically either, unless you other 'activist' no different.

Finally I notice that yet again there is no mention of 'education, education, education' this is obviously a none starter in funding terms or has fallen by the wayside as not important.

quite right OR - yet again, Dr. Pleming omits the one single word which WOULD make a difference to 558's future - "Education" ~x(

as for the MoS lacking a "hook" upon which to hang a reason for continuing publishing 558 news - well, a revamped and professionally run Education Programme would be that hook! X(

sadly, and I've kept this quiet for far too long, it is the VTS Education Manager who is the main problem. I'm directly involved in a scheme to engage youngsters, and attract them to 558 and the Club. Miriam Tong wasted over four months stating that i needed a CRB check, and various other ridiculous boxes to tick. standing my ground and doing my own homework into the matter, i have successfully proved that she herself knows nothing about the procedures, but still continued to block and thwart efforts to move the scheme forward, even after she had been instructed to lift the block

the woman is an utter joke! X(

and then her ultimate boss has the cheek to ask ME to dip into my pocket to help pay her salary, when my 'scheme' would have paid for six months of her salary at the very least!

558 will never survive until Education is given TOP priority in all matters. the HLF figured that out for themselves several years ago - hence the £2.7m grant! ;)

sack Miriam Tong, sack Andrew Edmondson, sack Dr. Pleming - then 558 might stand a chance!

Obviously more than there are of the 'most loyal supporters' as we have to pick up the slack and continue the funding push. :(

.............. Meanwhile back at the ranch...........

Personally - I will put aside any gripes about the management of VTTS for the time being. Now is not the time to go head hunting. We all know that 558 is a costly beast to run - it was never a secret from the outset. Sadly - we have failed to secure a major sponsor since return to flight - so it falls AGAIN to us troops on the ground to try do what we can to preserve her and see her perform in 2010.

I agree fully with the educational issues - (or lack of), management issues too - need to be examined and addressed in the fullness of time. I also know that the speil of 'give us your money' has worn thin for too many already.

This really is 'last chance saloon' time for 558.

I am sticking with it till the bitter end... mock all you may. I have faith that we can do it again.
