Hey sm, the radomes and radars were highly prized items at the end like rudders, by the RAF spares recovery lads, they were the first things to be removed to keep other aircraft in the air ;)

The scrappers never got any of these parts

I dont think he got all of them, but I will stand corrected ;) , I will ask him, he made it his life to get most of them, and has done the same with other aircraft.

320, I'm certain this must have been asked before, but did the LPG (as it became) have a choice of which birds to buy?

if so, what boxes did the (ultimately) two you ended up with tick?

i would assume you avoided Hangar Queens - but did you even get the choice?

sm, yeh its been asked before somewhere ;)

We had no choice, it was 728 or nothing, there were only 7 flyers left at the end to pick from, and we wanted a 'live' one that was to be flown to Brunty.
The other six had been bought by Arnold Glass with his 'millions' behind him in a sealed bid, he also wanted 728 but we got her, by luck really, just as well, dont you think ;)
We were just a bunch of nutters with some daft dream of saving a Lightning, seriously thats how were were seen ;)

As for ticking boxes, it was simple really, we wanted to save a 'live' Lightning, Ive said this before Im sure, but the LPG isnt a complicated bunch of guys with far sighted aims, its never been like that, we take this hobby one day at a time, first hurdle 'get an aircaft' and so on, step by step, the last 21 years has been like that ;)

904 was a last minute thing up to the wire really, she nearly never made it to us, the scrappy's nearly got her

We talked about buying a decoy or spares recovered one yes, but once we began to look into the costs and effort needed to shift one and rebuild it comsmetically it was a none starter for us, and by that time we were in the mixing pot of other people bidding for the last 7 flyers, it was all very nail biting stuff, sleepless nights etc ;)

All come good though didnt it :)

Yeh 904 was a call from warton, about a week before the end 'put this bid in' and shes yours ;) ;)

Someone who knew us well wanted her saving ;)

We all raided our piggy banks and stuck in what we could afford, then got the call 'shes coming Thursday' :)

Yeh only 7 at the end, not many really, yes it was sad about the cranfield six, well at least 458 is still alive and of course 452 is in SAfirca, so not so bad.

Its a strange thing really they sat there all that time, open to buyers, and no one was interested, no one, not a sole, even at the end when they were being sold for scrap, no one came forward to save them the only bidder was the scrappy, Nev Martin.

Sad but, like Ive said before 'you cant save em all'

Ours wouldnt be so special then, would they ;) :D
