Just found this, it was a test run of the No2 burner back in Jan after another strip down and pipe out 'job' to fix this bunrer prob, Jim in the seat me on the tail doing the 'MK1 eye ball' check of the reheat pipe connection seal faces, this is the only way to make sure theres no leaks round there, and was SOP back in the day, a very very important check.

The SOP for the first 'drop' is to 'blip' it in so I can make sure theres no leaks, I give the thumbs up and we go again for another try, notice the second time Jim keeps it in longer and throttles it in reheat, again another important check when eyeing the guages in the cockpit, Top JPT, Top RPM, Nozzle positons need closely monitoring and noting

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=earksmbC ... re=related

You can see from this shot that the bunrer wasnt as pronouced and powerfull, we did more work after this and basiclly tunred the 'wick' up, well thats the simple explanation anyway ;)

And this one

Fuel in first ;)

Jim ran the No2 first, and again you can see the 'lower' powered burner, very weak, even after 2 months of fiddling

And this comparision with me in the seat running the No1 burner, again Im throttling the reheat though its four stages

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnwXwWUP ... re=related

As you can see Jim and I work closely, always have, boucing off each other as it were, you need two heads with Lightnings and yesterdays pressure on me without him around was high

Interesting stuff for the like of me ;)

Im sure you all know what its like to have something in bits, put it back together properly and then run it sucessfully, these test run can be very intense but very rewarding, sometimes

Missed the minute's silence and the first attempts at starting and rolled up just as the successful starting sequence was beginning, so didn't get to see Andy knawing at his knuckles! However, although I didn't do any waiting, no doubt the runs were worth waiting for! Just fantastic - well done to the whole of the LPG and thank you for keeping these beasts alive :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause: \:D/

Great to get a chance for a chat afterwards - thanks Andy.

Oh dont remind me Gully, you can see from my reactions (im the one not wearing a dayglow) that I was nervous even before, and then when we got a slow pump 'run' and a weeeeeee phhhhhhhhhhhh ! which is known as a 'B' failure my mind was doing over time, and all eyes including the lads around me were looking at me, even John in the seat, no pressure then. :)

Pete who was man 'no1' and who used to do this for a living at Binbrook looked at me and said, 'youve had two shots, only one more and thats it mate', my answer was 'yes pete I know that thanks ' ~x(

Quick decision, go get the ground 28V ground set and we would have abit more 'wellie' going into the electrical system, and went for a No2 start first, which once started, if (phew) and brought up to 65% gives full internal AC and DC power and more engery to get the No1 going.

The plan worked, shoulders felt abit lighter ;)

The acc batteries were cold, so my renovation wasnt the cause ;) and afterwards I found the aircraft battery which had been on charge and was fully 'up'' had a cell down, this must have happened after we had done a failsafe check around lunch time, as it was fine then, Lightnings ! ~x(

Hey ho

Thanks mate, we have a good time (most of the time ;) ) with our hobby :)

See you soon :)

Hi all.

My comp has finally finished doing the video from Saturday. :) Apologies for the focus on the last run, the camera was really struggling with the light (or lack of as it was almost pitch black). Thanks once again to the LPG for doing a great job in keeping these aircraft running - even if they don't always want to start first time. ~x( ~x( ~x(

Also, the mince pies were lovely. Glad we managed to get them in the jet pipe quick enough this time. \:D/

Enjoy.

What it lacks in visual - it certainly makes up for with the audio :ymapplause: :ymapplause:
Not as much distortion as other footage ... thanks CF \:D/

Looks like StupidTube has squashed my lightning footage somewhat. Might have to have a play around when I get the time and see if it will upload to how it should look. Grrrr.

All good stuff! :)

Just a quick Hi-Jack: If anyone got any decent photos of the Guppy, could you upload them please? My camera was in the car and the one on my phone is very poor. Ta!

Why does the top afterburner when lit look like a neat 'blowtorch' flame .. and the bottom one look much bigger but 'ragged' and sort of ... welll.. all over the place??

Is it a trick of the filming or is there some technical but stupidly easy explanation :p :p

Spitfire, not a daft question at all, a very reasonable one ;)

Its the No2 engine RFCU (reheat fuel control unit) which is on the engine and to fix it we need to pull the engine, and get the engine overhauled (ummmmm) cost 15 - 25k ;)

We have been working on the No2 reheat for about 5 years on and off, pipe pulls to get at things to test them and check them, we have been though the reheat system over and over again, and each time we try a fix its another wing full of fuel to test out the 'fix' or not (£1000).
We are getting there though, as 5 years ago we had no reheat on the No2 engine at all, as this probelm isnt just one thing, Lightnings arent like that, most snags have a least 3-4 things that are playing you up, and its a matter of working though the system, canceling out the bugs, but, as we are only weekend 'fixers' and other things take our time up, sometimes the system gets another fault in mid 'fix', if you see what I mean ;)
It can be very very very anoying

We have now decided to leave this issue, its not a problem, just the fuel pressure is weaker on the No2 burner, basiclly its works and its works safely, we are even closer, as last time out it was tending to time out and cancel its self, today John cancled the burners, so we are getting there
This imperfect burner pattern happened many times even in RAF service, they were very rarely perfect.

I can almost be sure next time out she will do something different, LIGHTNINGS ! Im afraid ;)

The old saying is very apt, 'theres aircraft and then theres Lightnings'

:)

GC and Gary, thanks for the pics, but that one of me with the mince pies, ummmmmm, oh dear me !

They were lovely, done to a 'turn' really warm with a nice hint of avtur, see what 700 degrees C jet pipe can do, mind you its not a cheap way to warm mince pies up, but good fun, been doing that for years after a cold winters day antidet run ;)

Sorry its taken so long to get back to this - daughters and their appendixes (or is it appendices :D ) don't wait :p

That was a REALLY interesting answer and I enjoyed reading it - thanks very much - it will make especially good reading in 'THE book' :D ;) It's a shame you can't just cut and paste all your forum threads - and answers into MS Word - tweak it a bit - and you'd have a book and all the pictures to go with it .... plus MS Word would spellcheck it for you =))

Spitfire, hope your daughter is making a good recovery :)

Thanks, apart from the spelling mistakes :ymblushing: I just type it down as I see it, and as for a book, yeh we will see one day, but who would buy it, Im sure the readership would be small, I dont think my lightning and Q shed 'wafflings' would make a book to be honest, very 'monotone' to me ;)

Questions is what I respond to better :)

Oh I found last night after a few tests on the aircraft Battery that let us down right at the wrong moment, that it was totally shot, and this of course sends the whole electrical system down, the 28V geni must have just been enough to give it its last breath of life and got the No2 going, but Im sure that was a fluke, the next thing I was going to do was stick one of our spare batteries in and try again, funny who these things conspire agaisnt you in the heat of the moment ~x(
