All you military types on here - question - maybe a stupid question..... ;)

But in a desert scenario what specifically is done to the engines and running gear (cyclic heads and gearboxes) to stop dust ingestion .....for sometimes on these videos I see the Wokka disappear into a huge cloud of dust and that can't be good for mechanical bits sand being VERY abrasive :p :D
Exposed grease can't be good either as sand will stick to that like the proverbial and form a lovely carborundum grinding effect to ball races and bearings :D

Shame the embedding is disabled!

Spitfire, added to the EAPS described in the link, we also had a pressure washer loaded on a unimog which we used to jet wash the aircraft and after we wondered why one of ours that had an acceptable leak from the forward gearbox which coated the sliding tube had less problems than the others we decided to wipe down the others with a thin film of oil, did it when we were in Turkey during the relief operation there as well, much to the 'shock and horror' of the crews from the pristine clean shiney fleet of 7 Sqn.

As an aside the EAPS was brill at night, as the sand was extracted as it was like seeing what you see when you grind metal on a grindstone, a nice glowing ring with shower of sparks out of the exhaust.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Image
