What is your favorite military aircraft?

Hmm a very difficult choice, and probably not one I can nail down to a single aircraft tbh.

BUT, I DO agree that the Buccaneer was a superb aircraft. Very odd looking, and not particularly attractive to look at but did the job superbly. Always looks best in Fleet Air Arm too colours imo. :D

Another aircraft I have a real soft spot for is from WW2.

No not the Spitfire or Mustang, but the 'Me262 killer' The Hawker Tempest!

Not only looks the business, but did the business too. :D :ymapplause:
This is my sig:

I hope it's not too inflammatory and I hope that certain people wont completely misunderstand it like they did with the last one.

Ah - remember that in action back in 1967 on Torrey Canyon ;)

The stricken oil tanker, the Torrey Canyon, is refusing to sink despite more than a day of heavy bombing.
The supertanker, snagged on rocks between Land's End and the Scilly Isles for 11 days, began breaking up three days ago, leaking more of its cargo into the sea.
Bombing is a last-ditch attempt to send the supertanker to the bottom of the sea, and burn off the tens of thousands of tons of oil which have already formed a slick 35 miles long and up to 20 miles wide around the area.

The bombing raids began yesterday, when eight Royal Naval Buccaneers set off from Lossiemouth in Scotland.
Since then, the RAF and the Royal Navy have dropped 62,000lbs of bombs, 5,200 gallons of petrol, 11 rockets and large quantities of napalm onto the ship.

Despite direct hits, and a towering inferno of flames and smoke as the oil slick began to burn, the tanker refused to sink. The mission was called off for the day when particularly high spring tides put out the flames.

A disappointed statement from the Home Office said "We have been informed officially that the fire in the wreckage of the Torrey Canyon is out. We cannot say at this stage what the next step will be."

A brief spot in the limelight was afforded to Buccaneers of 800 and 736 NAS when they were called upon to bomb the stricken oil tanker Torrey Canyon to break her up and ignite the spilling oil in order to burn it off and prevent coastal damage.

Can't find any pics or video of the actual attack - but remember it very well live on TV :D

For me it would be; firstly the Vulcan, followed in no particular order with the Nimrod, Chinook, Hunter and finally the Tornado and only from time spent working on and in some cases flying in.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Image

Great picture, Mags! Is the rest of the article it (presumably) comes from as interesting? I'm intrigued... ;)

Cheers,

Gully

Oh yes, regarding the topic, I'm struggling, but here's my view:

Favourite jet - Vulcan (closely followed by Lightning, Bucc and Canberra) :D
Favourite prop job - Sea Fury (closely followed by Mossie and Corsair) :D

Found this on the Secret Projects forum
aemann wrote:
It was dreamt up by one Arthur Gibson who appears to be/have been a painter. He knocked up that pic as a what-if, as if Concorde could carry 3 x Blue Steels at 15000lbs apiece and maintain supersonic performance. Launching would have been fun with the trim control system working overtime. However, it was never an official or an industry study.

I guess it is the same Arthur Gibson who took the "Concorde formating with the Red Arrows" picture.

Ok for me it has to be the Buccaneer!

020 at Bruntingthorpe, the example which the RAF painted to represent RN service.
Just the youtube vids show any real plane enthusiast the sheer awsomeness of it
