More Golden Oldies

Postby Thumper » Tue Nov 10, 2009 9:58 am

Posted this on "the dark side" a while back so decided it deserves a place on here too ;)

Loads of great videos dating back to 1947 from Farnborough but the link below has Avro Vulcan VX777

http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=34710

My favourite video so far and the perfect video to demonstrate how things have changed for airshows over the years. Mmmmm Vulcan, Harrier, parachuting from a Lancaster, Red Arrows, now thats a line-up!

http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=45355

Not forgetting to mention the Harrier's first appearance, good commentary/prediction at the end "here's a plane thats going to be a winner in every way"

http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=45109

ENJOY! :D

Is 'the dark side' an aviation website? I might check it out if it is.

Actually, Air, Thumper is referring to a Forum
which shares its name with a well-known natural
constipation reliever -- or perhaps she means
the one whose name sounds like a well-known
card game......

Here on THIS "Forum", however, "The Dark Side"
can also refer to the one concerning a large and loud
aircraft which shall remain nameless.

Saying any of those names on here is somewhat
akin to mentioning "The Scottish Play" backstage
at the theatre. It is simply not DONE!

Come on people, stop talking in riddles.

I only asked a question about whether 'the dark side' was an aviation website.

I know I'm a newbie, but tbh I feel like I'm outside the 'clique' so to speak. :|

I'm really not sure why, but the Vulcan to the Sky forum is often referred to on here as "The Other Side" or even "The Dark Side" :(

UKAR is also similarly branded from time to time

i think the only one that tends to escape the name-calling is PPRuNe

unlike many other fora, here on Iconic, we pride ourselves on freedom of speech and FUN! within obvious limits of course! ;)

we also endeavour to have no over-zealous moderation - the worst it gets is when someone posts something containing a naughty word, or when Mayfly tries something and makes the forum explode - once an armourer always an armourer! =))

Sorry, Air, if I came across all cliquey. Looking
at my post in retrospect, I can see how you might have
gotten that idea.

What Saracenman says is true, though, and based on
most of our experiences Iconic is a breath of fresh air
by comparison with certain other aircraft forums.

About the worst thing that could be said of this place
is we do have this tendency to get a little silly at times.
And to be honest, when you yanked your posts on
Sunday I didn't know WHAT to think -- especially as
there was no explaination. At the time I was actually
quite upset about it.

But after all, it is ONLY A FORUM ON THE INTERNET!
-- a pretty GOOD one in my warped Murkin opinion --
but just one internet forum out of millions.

There you have it, Andrew, and I hope you'll stick
around and have a little fun with us once in a while.
SM tells me Dorset is boring as H**L in the wintertime.

I agree D4th we are sometimes a bit silly.......childness rules OK.....

Now the subject has cropped up, TBH perfectly honest I don't like the term 'darkside' of even 'otherside' when referring to other fora - to me there are no sides you either belong or cut your losses,

In the early days Iconic was & its members were accused of simply existing to subvert the TVOC forum as that is where most of us came from - nothing is further from the truth, it was just a case that other fora weren't giving us what we wanted anymore.

If you want to look at other aviation fora there are plenty of them out there, just Google:- ukar, pprune, flypast or fighter control, I belong to them all, you may even find some others - I rarely post on them as they are far to serious for me but I do pick up some early info. FC forum is especially good for flying info if you are a serious spotter & want to know whats happening & where.

Air these is no clique here, if we have given you that opinion I apologise, if you are willing to join in you are welcomed with open arms, we don't expect you to join in threads you don't like not all threads suit everyone - one in particular caused me a sense of humour failure yesterday [& it wasn't the pic capt comp] so apart from my mod duties I basically ignored it.

As for causing the exploding forum, I'm afraid it's my badly timed attempt to do serious harm to SM.......... :p

Oh great, now this forum has gone all UKAR on me, Lancaster, Argosy same difference....ish, much, maybe, somewhat... I really don't give a ~x( ~x( ~x( ~x( ~x( ~x( ~x( ~x(

Air... I refer to UKAR (UK Airshow Review) as "The Dark Side". I left that forum to come here. If you have the photographic skills of David Bailey and like to constantly belittle people you'll love it over there! :ymdevil: You seem like a nice guy though so I suggest you stay here ;) I don't feel theres a clique here, I am a new member myself having been here under a week! Naturally on a forum thats been around for a while various members have met up and become familiar with each other so you do get the odd inside joke. Just jump in head first and enjoy, picking on Saracenman's name seemed like a good place for me to start :D
