Lancaster question

Postby Spitfire » Sun Nov 01, 2009 12:56 am

In the most recent Flypast there's a lots of pics of the three Lancs - the 2 fliers and Just Jane.

The BBMF one is shown in a large poster image and has a top view showing what appears to be 2 square-ish holes in the top of the fuselage between the top turret and the main cockpit... which the Canadian one doesn't appear to have .....

So.... oh great and venerable ones...... what pray are these 'holes' ... my meagre brain has worked out that perhaps they may be hatches of some kind - but if so what purpose do they serve in flight - as when flying surely they would let the sky in ....very noisily.... or blow away the navigators maps.... or some such ;) :p :D

And on this one there's only one such 'hole' - and where the other one 'was' is what looks like a hatch cover - so my hatch theory begins to hold water ......but why hatches there - and why open in flight ? :-??

They are TARGA roof panels as fitted to only the top models of Lancaster! :p

They're escape hatches SF - BBMF fly with them open in hot weather
In memory of a very dear friend - Mike Pearson

Very fond memories of Robbie Gilvary - DTs 1st Vulcan Captain who taught DT all he knew.

Aha - air conditioning - hadn't thought of that =)) =))

Knew there would be some rational reasoning.

Does the pilot have to give permission for them to be opened or is it just anyone's shout?

Anyone down the back can just take them out - it makes no difference to the handling of the aircraft so the captain isn't bothered about it,
