Thoroughly enjoyable programme... looks like a good series Captain Slow has hit upon there.

Excellent approach for getting kids (well 13yr olds) interested in things outside computer games. As Iggie said.. all key items addressed. The kids achieved something alien to them - (doing something with an end result) and looked really pleased in doing so.

Lucky beggar also got a go in Graces' Spitfire into the bargain. Huh...

Its not just about it being a tank ... its big, its loud, it has an engine in it - but these boys weren't bothered.

They will probably grow up, learn to drive and pick a car due to its COLOUR not what's under the bonnet

I don't think it just to do with driving tanks tbh, the general impression I get from the youth of today is they just don't have the same yest for enjoyment that we seemed to have. I never turned down an opportunity to 'give it a go' now a days if its not connected to electronic games/celebrities/TV personalities they just don't seem bothered.....

Zest? Lust? I put it down to something else I've noticed.....

This is the case in USA, and I assume it's the same on your end.
When a child is little, they're never allowed out of their parents'
sight or reach. I had truly GREAT parents, but in today's world
they would be viewed as irresponsibly lax. By the time I was four
and five I was all over the neighbo(u)rhood on my trikes and
bikes and visiting neighbo(u)rs and exploring -- as were my little
friends. At five years starting Kindergarten, my Dad went with
me the first day and from then on I walked or rode my bike.
Today, nearly ALL children up to 8 or 9 are walked or driven
short distances to and from school Every Day. Parents who don't
do this themselves or provide a paid caregiver are viewed as
Bad Parents! Children are Over-Supervised, spend far too much
time Indoors and receive from all of this a Great Fear of the
World at Large and what might Happen to them "Out There"!
They are completely sheltered from the Bad Old World right up
to the time they're supposed to magically transform into responsible,
functioning adults, and their parents then wonder why they have
such poor judgement!

Adventure? They are cultivated to FEAR adventure..........except
on television or the computer while they're safely indoors. It is
to be savored vicariously while warm and dry and safe from harm.

a few years ago, when living in a tiny picturesque Dorset village, my daughter had made some friends. EVERY day she went out to play with them - in the same vein as my brothers and i did at her age - wading through streams, climbing trees etc

EVERY morning she wanted to go by herself to the local shoppe to buy me a paper and some bread - i have never taken a paper, but i did THAT week, simply to give her some independence!

one evening i had to rush the missus (not my daughter's mother) to the doctor's literally around the corner - she couldn't walk so i had to drive her, as she'd injured her foot. i left a note in the porch for my daughter, in case she came home and wondered where we were - it struck me that that was the very first note I'd EVER left her!

upon returning my daughter to her mother, back in London, i received major verbal abuse - apparently i was irresponsible etc, as "Everyone knows the countryside is full of paedophiles!"

i tried to point out that London has 10,000,000 inhabitants, whilst my sleepy Dorset village would struggle to gather 300 people! i know where i would want my daughter running around!

As ever Danforth, nail struck firmly on the head; My father paid for a week long Rail Rover ticket for me and a mate when we were thirteen (33 years ago), we used them to see how far up the country and back we could get. Answer? Thurso!!
We slept on the trains and/or stations, we were sensible and kept to busy areas, we phoned home every evening and morning (from a phone box; when did you last use one of those?) and we had a whale of a time. I am confident that my own son would have been sensible enough to do the same at thirteen. What I'm not sure about is if there are enough other sensible people out there to leave him to it without taking him into care and arresting me for being (as SM was accused of) irresponsible....

Amen to the previous comments;

As a parent one has to temper the natural instinct to protect and allow the young person to investigate things for themselves. We should nurture not restrict. I am sure with the way communication works these days that there are no more paedophiles than there was, we are just more aware and react by restricting our childrens development.

Brilliant programme - I've decided I like James May - he and I are kindred spirits - whatever he says he's thought about kits I'd thought it too - I too started with the plastic bag 1/72nd kits at the local newsagent and I too wanted to see if we could get a 1 : 1 kit I AM Captain Slow's disciple

Did you notice though that he didn't go to the local inner city comprehensive full of kids from council estates in hoodies - he went to Thomas Telford School for the well heeled impeccably uniformed and distinctly middle class child

Nice to see he got a second flight in ML407 too - Caroline Grace is brilliant

Oh I don't know - it came out in the film that he likes things to be RIGHT (to use capitalised emphasis which you seem to enjoy )
