Harrier on a trailer!

Postby Flipflopman » Fri Oct 23, 2009 11:39 pm

For anyone who might be interested, there will be a Harrier GR9 travelling down from Prestwick to Cottesmore on the back of a 40 footer this coming Tues/Weds.

Myself and several others have spent the week up at Prestwick preparing the jet for a road move after it was involved in a Birdstrike, and had to divert there.

I appreciate totally that most of you won't be bothered in the slightest, but I though that there may possibly be some in the local area who might fancy grabbing some unusual pictures

Ah, but will YOU be DRIVING, Ron????????

Progress reports via Twitter might net you
some convenient roadside refreshments
along the way!

Thanks Ron - the most unusual sight I saw this year was a lightning nose on a trailer going past my house - wish I had my camera handy then. I assume it was the nose from the one 5 SQN are doing up at Waddington, tho' why they took it down the back roads I have no idea, a bit bumpy & uneven to say the least!!!!

well it's not the sort of thing one sees everyday - especially current, serving machines!

what was the wisdom of hauling it by road then FFM? too badly damaged to repair remotely, at Prestwick, and fly out?

Thankfully, I won't be driving it Danforth! ;)

SM,

Now THAT is a good question!! It's also a question that was on the lips of all of us last week, but shall we just say that it's a good indicator of the current state of the RAF.... ;)

Finally managed to get around to resizing all of the pics of the Harrier move from Prestwick!! So here are a few pics showing just how alike Harriers are to Airfix kits!!! Apologies for the poor quality, these were all taken on a mobile phone, and most of all, sorry for the delay! :D :D

Image
Poorly Harrier, unaware of what's about to take place!

Image
Engine panels off, Wing disconnected, ready to be lifted off. My dirty backside isn't due to all the sitting down I do... Honest! ;)

Image
Fin and Tailplane disconnected and ready to come off. Those are imaginary cans of Coke balancing on the Vortex Generators there!! ;) :D

Image
One of the Sea Kings we were sharing the Hangar with. Much bigger than you'd think!!

Image
Face/Off... Harrier outstares Sea King!!

Image
Wing off, Fin and Tailplane off, just like the model!

Image
ZD461 stripped. Connoisseurs amongst you may note the stabilisers.. ;)

Image
Wing, Tailplane and Fin, ready to go. Simple pimple. Only 12 bolts holding all 3 of those items on!

Image
Ready for take off...

Lift off...

If it don't Hovver, it ain't worth the Bovver

Loading on to the trailer.

Interesting stuff - thanks Ron.

Did you ever find out if there was a good reason for roading it (other than XP's suggestion!)?

Wow that comes apart easily. What a great design the Harrier is.
This is my sig:

I hope it's not too inflammatory and I hope that certain people wont completely misunderstand it like they did with the last one.
