Ah yes 2 years ago, this is the one the TVOC forum thought was BBMF & when I said it wasn't because I was drinking with the BBMF crew at 5.30 that same day they didn't believe me.

I don't meant to sound harsh buts that is why display flying is a discipline & you don't do off the cuff manouvers, all accidents are very sad, feel for his family... :( :( :(

very sad, and very unusual i would have thought. we've all seen display pilots, eyes closed, going through their routines on the ground - odd that Brian Brown chose to change his plans in the air.

thanks for the link HH

This is the first report have seen regarding this accident. I for 1 never assume when it comes to things like this ,They say an unplaned manouver or could it have been unintentional ie to maybe avoid air to air contact in some way .Whatever did actually happen He obviously didn't have the height to recover.I said it at the time my condolences to his family .

Made all the more sad because he wasn't even down to do that display but stepped in at the last minute so to speak and given the fact that he had departed the display line & was flying away from the crowd.

I guess we will never know the real reason he decided to deviate from his planned manouvres, a real shame to lose another talented airshow performer! :(

Yeah I remember agreeing with you because we had passed Coningsby on the way home from East Kirkby that afternoon and seen both Hurricanes in the hangar, very sad day, was the same day as the rally driver crashed his helicopter :(

Completely agree.

The airshows of the old days.. were a 'tragedy waiting to happen' - and footage of those displays are pretty worrying, when viewed by todays standards. Nowadays - everything happens foward of crowd line with minimum height restrictions - safety is paramount to both pilots and crowd. Display pilots know the turning parameters of thier aircraft when approaching the crowd head on (230 mtrs seems to be the boundary) - and NO overflying the viewing crowd.

Sadly.. there are still accidents - Ramstein 1988 and Sknyliv 2002 are prime examples. Aircraft and pilots are fallible - wherever they are in the sky :( .

Slightly off topic, but this shows what a display pilot is thinking and has to be aware of - at every show....

I think that only the Red Arrows have special dispensation to approach from crowd rear for thier displays. As for Brians manouvre - we will never know, maybe he was avoiding a birdstrike or negociating a mechanical failure.

RIP Brian Close.
