whos a lucky girl then?

Paul Mulcahy who was the CCA test pilot for 558 with MW earlier in the year is one of the Catalins pilots -we've known Paul for years so he showed us around the Catalina today - \:D/

Gear levers
when landing on water they use the gear as brakes but have indivual levers so they can retract the nose wheel..the left hand red lever is the gear - the right hand red levers are for the individual wheels

last month trains - this month Catalinas

and in reply to earlier questions although I didn't specifically ask Paul I got the impression they can still land on water..

Well, MEE-OW! When do you get a
Ride, Your Ladyship?

And did you get any exterior shots?

Just watched all the above videos, entertaining & interesting stuff; Thanks D4th for posting!

I've always liked the Catalina, right from making an Airfix kit of one many years ago, and I love to see them fly now. My best picture of the Plane Sailing Cat was taken at Sywell last year

IGZ:

I built a Catalina model years ago, too!

I think mine was a Revell, and it was dark USN
blue -- wheels up only but the floats would
pivot up and down. Not positive, but I think
Revell and Airfix used to trade toolings for
some of their models. Maybe we built the
same one? Mine used to hang from my ceiling....

Mine hung (hanged?) from the ceiling too, although it's younger protege (where do you find accents on keyboards???) currently resides on top of the bookcase in the lounge. This one is a Revell kit, currently in dark/light grey but I must admit I'm tempted to go for the 'Black Cat' look.....
Airfix did for some time trade moulds with Revell (and some others), when Dad worked at Gillette in the late 60's, they used to make some of the toolings for both companies, working from single issue drawings.
You could always tell the kits with Gillette tooled parts, the pilots were clean shaven.....

What did you use to hang it by before monofilament was invented? :-o

Black cotton sewing thread, of course,
with thumbtacks into the ceiling. Thread
was looped and tied so I could easily get
models down and pretend-fly them to
keep the dust off....

And when they became old and out of favour, did you take them outside and shoot them with an air(BB)gun?

Bangers were my weapon of choice for 'disposal' of fatigue indexed items. Ships were made to float on the local lake & blown up in their natural environment.... :D
