[-x no no no Bubbs - you're confusing it with how to detect a witch! ;)

not a fan of Tornado really, but clearly a very capable bit of kit - how long will they be in service then oh mighty FFM? :)

In my defence the reference I used stated its main purpose for production was to be a "close support & attack aircraft" so that makes it an in betweener imho ;)

The Mighty Buccaneer was the SUPREME MUDMOVER in it's day and would still put up a damn good fight these days!

You've got it right HH. There is no need for a top ten because they still can't touch her in all departments.

Ha ha!!

The F3 would have tracked and destroyed the Lightnings before they even realised the F3's were there!! I'd love to be more scathing, but I actually have a big soft spot for the Lightning too!! ;)

Seriously though, from its shaky beginnings the F3 has evolved into a seriously potent aircraft. Although it will never be a dogfighter, it is quite possibly the best long range interceptor in the world today, bar none. Uprated Foxhunter radar, JTIDS, AMRAAM/ASRAAM and many others mean that it can literally destroy targets before they even know they are being tracked. In recent years, the F3 has regularly handed F-15's, F-16's etc.. their arses on a plate at Red Flag in BVR engagements, although admittedly, it doesn't fare too well when things get up close and personal!! :p

I'd still have a lightning in my top 3 though!! ;)

When i was doing me aeor engineering course in sweaty land we had a visit to Leuchers and one of the techy types was telling us that with the JTIDS system they were having kill ratios of 16:1 against the Murkins, the moaned and said it wasn't fair so they limited its use and the kill ratios went down to something like 11:1. the murkins still moaned so they stopped using it and the ratios went down to 4:1. Don't know how true it sounds but it had us all wetting ourselves. :))

Pretty much 100% true mate.

JTIDS is a purely British invention, and basically uses the AWACS to paint up a big picture of where everything in the sky is, what it is, and what it's doing. That way, in the same way that Dolphins work together to round up their fish before attacking them, The F3's can 'round up' the enemy, and keep an eye on the 'big picture' before attacking with the odds stacked massively in their favour! You're dead right too, the Septics hate JTIDS for that very reason!!

All's fair in love and war!! :))

In the OLD days before MONEY became KING, we had a visit at Wittering from some Murkin A7D Corsairs, they conducted Disimilar Air Combat Training with the base GR3 Harriers with disappointing results! :(

For the second week, several of the Harriers had been adorned with large temporary white diamond shaped panels painted on to the wing top surfaces and the tailplanes. The Murkins then managed to get in to position for some Sidewinder shots. :ymapplause:

Nice to know that your enemy will make their aircraft conspicous for your benefit! =)) :-o

A Buccaneer was employed to bomb the 'Torrey Canyon' off the Cornish coast in 1967.

Several were, I can't remember which naval squadron was involved but they used a mix of Mk1s and Mk2s and dropped 500lb and 1000lb bombs and 2" rockets to break her open and ignite the crude oil!

On Tuesday 28th March 1967 the Fleet Air Arm sent Buccaneers from Lossiemouth to drop forty-two 1,000lb bombs on the wreck. This was followed by the Royal Air Force in sending Hunter jets to drop cans of aviation fuel to make the oil blaze. Seventy five per cent of the bombs were on target and both sections of the wreck were on fire.

However, exceptionally high tides had put the blaze out and it took further attacks by Sea Vixens from the Naval Air Station at Yeovilton and Buccaneers from the Naval Air Station at Brawdy as well as more RAF Hunters with napalm to ignite the oil until the wreck was free from oil.

Both 736 and 800 Squadrons from RNAS Lossiemouth were involved in the bombing of the Torrey Canyon oil tanker.
