Typhoon (WWII) Art Project

Postby ActionArt » Wed Jul 29, 2009 9:09 pm

I've just begun a large art project involving Typhoons. It will show them attacking AA guns on the east side of the Rhine during operation Varsity. Over 400 of them were involved. So far I have 4 pilots that were there (out of the small handful that are left) on board to sign it. It will be a very fun project.

If you have any good info, pictures, drawings, advice, etc. regarding the Typhoon please do share! I have quite a bit but more is better. Good flying photos seem to be in short supply.

Thanks!

Thanks! Will do. I'll likely be doing more than one Typhoon project. I'm still looking for a pilot that had some air to air victories in the Typhoon. I'll check with them.

It's a mighty fine picture Tom, but yes, I'm looking for the WWII version. The one with 24 cylinders!

ActionArt, don't worry about Tom.com - it seems they don't teach pupils to read TOPIC TITLES in school these days! :((

Here's Hendon's airframe MN235:

It's a bit cramped where it was located the day I was there, so apologies it's not a better shot. From recollection, this is the only surviving complete original Hawker Typhoon airframe.

Thanks! That's what I've heard, it's the only one. What a terrible shame. It's my favorite WWII fighter.

I'm trying to figure out if they're modified the exhaust pipes on this one. The old photos I have looked different. Or maybe they just had different cowlings on some.

The exhaust stubs were modified (extended) on later models after it was found CO was leaking into the cockpit. Even after the mod, Typhoon pilots used oxygen as a matter of routine as the problem was never fully overcome.

Also, removable exhaust fairings were fitted during 1943, but soon discarded.
