Thank you for the comment on the photo.

Certainly was a day to remember, however that last video posted is a cracker!

This clearly shows the wind sock & gives a good indication of wind direction & speed.

It's also an awsome photo.

Cheers,

it looked to me as though he was very lucky and managed to float her over the runway markers - wouldn't like to have seen the outcome if he had clipped them

Looking at the way the nose was nodding at the start of the run, I wonder if Tina was more tail-heavy than was good for her?

XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

Could just be she was very light, last time I saw Victor legs that long we were pushing the jet into the hanger for a major!

Have got this months Flypast and the pilot infers that the jet was very low on fuel.

Some one on the forum linked into earlier (Mayfly?) was asking if the pilot considered streaming the chute, good job he did not try cos on some of the footage I have seen you can see the Hopper doors open. Wonder if he knew he did not have that option.

t'was not me Sam I had already read elsewhere about the chute - all I queried was the control configuration & if it was 'co-pilot' or righthand seat occupant, I still haven't got a news agent yet that sells flypasts.. X( - thats what comes of living in the sticks... :(

Certainly Ian,

Firstly Sooty was speculating that 715 was nodding (the nose was going up and down as it started to roll) he thought that could have been because the CofG (Center of Gravity) was a long way back, this would result in the aircraft pitching up when the pilot took his hand off the stick to shut the throttles.

I thought it was probably just very light. The undercarriage is a liquid spring with a gas spring on top (rather like the front forks on a motorcycle, but with a separate chamber on top filled with Nitrogen). If the aircraft is light it tends to bounce about a lot more (gas is fairly easy to compress so when you put fuel in the legs get squashed but it's mainly the gas in the top of the leg)

The brake chute on the Victor goes in a hopper at the base of the fin, it's basically the same chute as a Vulcan (558 uses ex Victor chutes) but instead of one big door it has 2 doors which open sideways if you look at the pictures SM used on page 2 of this thread you can clearly see the open doors (if the doors are open there is no chute fitted.)

Hope this helps, just trying to keep my self busy here.

Could you tell which doors I meant?

If you look at the first photo it looks as if there are 4 longitudinal strakes (sticky up bits) along the top of the fuselage the outboard ones are part of the Air Brakes the inboard ones are the Brake Chute hopper doors.

funny because when I saw the clip I thought she looked like she was ready to leap into the air, perhaps thats why - but expect it's more to do with psychologically knowing she does

with the brake chute doors open would that interfer with the rudder ,as it would apear it didnt move when she was of the ground ,"alternatly would nose wheel steering still be engaged at the time "

Nice big wing designed to lift best part of 100 ton, aircraft only weighs about 50 tons = you do the math I'll get the Pizza. :D

By the way Mayfly it was your link,

http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showth ... 60&page=15

post No. 446. Think he'd have looked a bit sheepish hitting the switch, that is assuming it is a switch it's 25 years since I looked at that end of the system. Do remember the little link you had to disconnect at the other end to shut the doors though.

I've seen the Air Brakes in action before so I knew which they were so I figured you meant these...

i did read on prune that the other victor operators had warned the brunty guys about the c of g calculations and they stated that they check their c of g before doing runs (may be just a case of wise after the fact though)

i think it was a number of factors and a bad call made , as to the type of display.. :(

High Wind Speeds/direction
LOW Fuel
inexprerrencied crew members
etc..

just glad everything turned out in the end.. if it had have crashed that would probably have put and end to all old aircraft taxi runs :(
