Here is the story to go with the photos...

This is an excerpt from a book (The Lions Reign) by a close friend of mine Steve Clements.
Steve very kindly gave me the VC10 section of the book to use as I wish as long as I give the credit.

Thanks Steve..

Reviving the old bomber habit of naming the Squadrons aircraft, the K2s at Bahrain all
sprouted a "The Empire Strikes Back" sign and a BP (British Petroleum) badge on the nose.

The Empire Strikes Back refers back to the Squadrons Vulcans who had used it in the
Falklands War, and BP was the callsign that was used by the Squadrons aircraft during the
build-up stage to the war.

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) was due to visit the detachment, and Sqn Ldr Phil Bayer the Detachment Commander had spent quite a few days pondering how he was going to explain about the unauthorized paintings on the aircraft. He thought of a way out of his predicament, one evening whilst having a leisurely bath. When the CAS asked about the BP badge he was told about the callsigns the detachment were using and also that BP had been approached to consider a donation to the RAF Benevolent Fund (RAFBF). A few days later Sqn Ldr Bayer was delighted to accept a cheque for £500 from the local representative of BP for the RAFBF, and at the same time heave a huge sigh of relief!

Having invested some time "surfing the web", one found the following article that made me chuckle somewhat.

I quote directly:
"The best known type of nose art was undoubtedly the pin up pictures that decorated so many World War II aircraft. Like the beautiful female images used as mastheads on old sailing ships, nose art frequently used women as subjects. This sometimes took the form of a painting of a girlfriend’s or wife’s face, along with her name, on a pilot’s airplane, but more frequently the model used was a “dream girl,” carefully copied from a calendar, magazine or poster, that served as a reminder that the current lonely condition of many in service would not always continue. "

Image: Miss Please—This is the only surviving image of one piece of nose art. Despite the pun of its name, the Luftwaffe did not miss this aircraft: the B-24 on which it was painted was shot down over Yugoslavia on October 14, 1944.

I do hope the good lady wife refrains from signing up to these here "forums"
