Nice to see some can make it, great ;)

Cluny, ummmm doubt very much we will sort 728's snags out in the time thats left, but she will run though, you will have to make do with only 1 burnner though, sorry, Im p***** off about as well, we have put so much effort in on her over the last few years, and we had her fixed not 6 weeks ago, but shes old and shes a Lightning, you can never sit back with 'em', they will always throw something at you from the pram ;)

728's snag is a deep one, if its engine related, which I think it is, then her running days are over, with two burners anyway

See you there :)

Gill and I will be there, Andy! We may be arriving separately if I'm on my way back from the Lake District having camped after watching 558 over Windermere from the fells, but no intention of missing your do!

As for 728's burner snag, did you manage to attempt the flame 'tweaking' you spoke about a few weeks ago? Whatever the outcome, there's plenty of in-service footage clearly showing burner snags(!), so hopefully 728 can run for a goodly number of years yet.

Cheers,

just as a matter of interest 320 - would there ever have been a situation when a Lightning would takeoff with only one reheat functioning, or would they only ever fly with both?

Hi sm

Yeh Lightnings took off with both out sometimes, usually one would fail though, very rare to see both out, it was a common thing to see one out.

They were tempmental at the best of times ~x(

What happens in the event of the burner failing is the system 'times' out after 5 seconds if the burner does not lite, what then happens is the nozzles go from fully open to fully closed in milli second giving extra thrust though the smaller 'ole' as it were, and allowing the aircraft to get off the ground.

When staitc running, you bring the throttle up to 102% 'dry' the thrust is felt alot, but as you 'rock' the throttle though the gate there is a momentary drop in thrust, as the nozzles open fully, but then the burner lites and your in no doubt its lit, belive me ;)

Same when you come back out, as you drop out of the 'gate' and the nozzles are still fully open the thrust drops, but within seconds the nozzles close to the 'pre open' position and you get another kick in the back.

But this dosent last long as you wait there for a second or so to let it all stablize and then your hand is heading back down the throttle quadrant, to 'calmer waters' ;)

Here you go, circa 1987, Binbrook, No2 has just lit fine and what your seeing in the No1 pipe is the 'hot shot' but no burner, the next thing happening here is the nozzle would go fully closed and give more thrust for lift off

Cheers ;)
