superb clip Danf, but it still hasn't made me like Mustangs! :(

they just look awkward to me, both on the ground and in the air - lacking the grace of the Spitfire

love the Merlin music though :D

I'm with SM on this one.

Whilst the sound is great.. she isn't in the same league as the Spitfire. JMO ;) (Nice clip though)

That's alright, guys......

As far a single-engine prop fighters go, I'm
hard-pressed to pick just one favo(u)rite...
I'd have to say I love Spit, Mustang and Corsair
about equally and for slightly different reasons.

Hold a gun to my head (figuratively, please...)
and the P-51 just noses out the other two, but
mostly due to the Packard contribution.

Nah, I always preferred the P-51.

I think it's just because I've only ever seen one twice. You can see a spitfire at least once a week.

Mustang was FAR from being a "rubbish plane" - it had much better performance than all but the last Marks of Spitfire!

even then, its range was far superior

don't forget that it was originally designed to an RAF specification too - the Murkins took it on themselves because it was a mighty fine machine!

I'm still not a massive fan though - it just looks a little too 'industrial' for my taste - Spits on the other hand......... ;)

I like Mustangs - that distinctive radiator whine as they dive in, coupled with the burble of the Merlin! Get yourself to Flying Legends, Gaz, then you'll see several together!

Was there ever a plan to fit the Griffon engine to the Mustang? Or would the more thirsty engine have compromised the Mustang's all-important range too much? Not heard of it being considered, but I wondered if anyone else had?

Thanks for the clip, Dan4th, particularly as it was filmed about 15min from where I live!

Cheers,

Gully

i think there were/are a couple (at least) of Griffon Mustang racers in Murka - never looked at for Squadron service though - the Mustang had plenty of oomph as it was, and the focus was rapidly becoming jet fighters anyway

Au contraire mon brave! The Mustang (our name for it) exceeded its Air Ministry specification when first delivered! :) The "rubbish plane", as issued, was well liked, a well armed, capable fighter and a good performer at medium altitude and made a significant contribution at a time when we were woefully short of fighters. ;)
The only real issue was the asmatic Allison engine which, I think I am right, was a poor performer at altitude, compared to the Spitfire with its supercharged Merlin. :( :(

Once the magnificent Merlin was fitted it made a good aircraft into a superb one, probably the best escort fighter of WWII. :D :D

...and enabled, for the very first time in the War, a realistic cross-channel bomber escort - something which our homegrown machines (with the exception of some Mozzies) were incapable of doing!

amongst many other things ;)

i have read though, in several places, that the Mustang was never the stable gun platform that the Hurri was :p

Well... Mustang and Corsair (whilst being undoubtably good aircraft in US - and achieved iconic status) still don't do it for me. JMO

<<< still prefers the Spit and Hurricane ;)
