superb - thanks for posting those DD :ymapplause:

what a shame that RAF Woodhall Spa has gone the same way as so many wartime bases...

Image

:(

fascinating history too...

dropped the first 12,000lb Tallboy bombs and blocked the Saumur Tunnel through which all direct rail communications from the south of France to the Normandy front had to pass.

attacked the U-boat bases at La Pallice, Lorient and Brest. At Brest the uncompleted hull of the battleship Clemenceau and the cruiser Gueydon were sunk.

carried out two daring low-level mining operations against the ship canals at Stetting and Königsberg; all Swedish shipping was withdrawn from the Baltic trade. The Tirpitz was sunk in Tromsø fjord on 12 November by aircraft from Woodhall Spa and Bardney

but at least it will never be forgotten...

Pass the petwood (and RAF Woodhall) at least 4 times a week, yet I've never been in the hotel. Although I have it on good authority that they do the best toasties in Lincolnshire :D

If anyone is ever in the area on a Sunday, I urge you to go to Thorpe Camp, really good little museum (and tey have a EE Lightning :) ), it's £2 and really is good value, and make sure you see the model Vulcan.

The Petwood have a Lancaster bar full of 617 related memorabilia. Go in the main door, turn left past reception and it's down the coridoor (which is full of paintings of Lancasters, many with signatures like Bill Reid VC, Leonard Cheshire VC and several dambuster aircrew including Ray Grayson (now deceased) who I met at the Petwood a few years ago. Unfortunately the Lanc wasnt there for a flypast and the weather was pants too. There were loads of officers and airman there yesterday too as well as loads of old WW2 aircrew.
