USS Roosevelt

Postby Stevieboy » Sat Apr 04, 2009 12:47 pm

Got the old push bike out of the garage and puffed and wheezed my way down to Stokes Bay so I could have a look at how Danforth's tax dollars are being spent. Here's a few of the piccies (more to follow). I may have another wander down late afternoon when the light should be better.

huge lump of steel that - could the tiny vessel behind be one of OUR carriers? =))

any idea what she's doing here SB? anything to do with the G20? i can imagine the Murkins sending such a task force to follow the Murkin Boss - we tend to send a couple of flat-footed chaps with big sticks in their pockets =))

Tide goes in tide goes out. Not sure what's behind that though.

Here's the Pompey line on the visit

"U.S. Fleet Visits Portsmouth
More than 4,800 United States Sailors from Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike are scheduled to arrive in Portsmouth on Saturday from 7am. The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is scheduled to anchor off the coast while the guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans is scheduled to arrive pier-side the same day. During the port visit, crew members will enjoy the culture and beauty of historic Portsmouth, participate in a variety of local events and activities, and tour surrounding areas."

My guess is that the real reason for the visit is to test combat readiness by taking on the toughest test known to man - the young ladies of Portsmouth. ;)

Are the Murkin boys ready for this? [-x

me finks that the RN Provosts will have been rather busy during the evenings - pulling bodies out of the local pubs! :p

i recall some years ago, going with an ex to meet up with her new boyfriend, who's name i forget - he was a rating on Illustrious - we went out for a 'quiet' pint in one of the local hostelries. it would appear that some warship from foreign parts was visiting Portsmouth which sparked a 'minor' fracas with the RN chaps =))

i felt as if i was in a cartoon - pint-glasses, chairs, tables - even PEOPLE flying past me through the air! =))

then the RN provosts arrived - looking almost Dickensian in their uniforms - complete with massive long batons; they took NO prisoners, that's for sure! =))

all the while, my Illustrious chum sat and sipped his beer, as if nothing were untoward - apparently this was normal behaviour for a Friday night in Portsmouth! =))

All good trade for the Pompey Lil's! ;)

Didn't usually frequent the pubs near the dockyard - it was bad enough up in town! Spent a few "interesting" nights in the the Mucky Duck (White Swan) near the Guildhall... :D

Still have the scars (mental and physical) MF and have been reduced to spending my evenings pouring over aircraft recognition books and knitting bobble hats. :( :( :(

Just wandered down to the Bay again to see if the light was any better which it was:

I'm sure I've heard it said that the States has enough a/c to equip every member of the RAF with one
