A 360 view of the Duxford Lancaster Cockpit .....

You need Quicktime to view - but its worth it ;) :D

Hold left mouse click down and move mouse to spin around or up and down .... unfortunately no zoom :(

For those of us not lucky enough to have been in a Lanc cockpit its also good to look out on the Merlins either side :D

That's great Spitfire. It just shows how exposed the flight deck is.

SM, As you can see from my last post, there are two sets of controls, only the 1st Pilots seat is fixed, (left side). Can't remember exactly, but I think the Air Engineer sits where you would imagine the 2nd pilot would sit, but on a canvas fold up seat ( to allow for access to forward crew positions). I imagine he could then take over control from there if the pilot was rendered hors de combat?? There seem to be two in pilots position in the pictures below, but that could be a pilot acting as Air Eng? This is one for Mayfly to get from DT, who flew the old bus frequently I believe. :ymblushing: :ymblushing: Before you get me a twhacking SM, I meant the Lanc!! :ymblushing: :ymblushing:

This view from the Radio Op position looking forward shows I think, the fold up seat, on the starboard fusesalge wall under the Air Eng instruments, forward of the Nav's seat ( just visible on the left).

I'm STILL amazed at the Lanc's massive payload - i really don't know how they managed to stuff so many 1,000s of lbs in there - from some angles, Lancs can even look a little fragile! :-o

must be those mighty Merlins! ;)

SM, Have another look at my pics in last post, I just edited to add a Radio Op position view for'ard. You can see just how tight a fit it is for the crew, who must have been very short and wiry to get up front to the guns and bomb aiming positions. At my height and size I had to kneel to fit in the mid upper gun turret and I simply could not get in the nose gun or rear gun positions. :(( Probably why the could carry more bombs with only teeny tiny airmen. You 'd have fitted anywhere then mate? =)) =)) =))

not sure that the getting IN was the issue DB :(

i inherited one of those R1155 radio sets from a neighbour of mine some years ago - absolutely MINT condition, but it simply sat around gathering dust. a while later i gave it to my mate's uncle Fred who's a valve radio NUT - he had all the right power connections for it, and had it crackling in no time at all

with all the ancient radios he had (only ONE Lanc set though ;) ) he had decided that modern radio broadcasts just weren't appropriate - so he'd built a little transmitter in one of his many garden sheds, to broadcast 1940s recordings he had

so, on went the tape-player and the transmitter, and we retired to his front room to tune the R1155 in - what a surreal experience it was to hear Churchill and Vera Lynn emanating from my Bakelite headset plugged into a wartime Lanc radio set! =))

I've never felt happier to give something away to someone else in all my life - in my hands, the R1155 was nothing more than a curiosity - in Fred's hands though.................. ;)
