The Bombardier Dash 8 (formerly the de Havilland Canada Dash 8, sometimes abbreviated as DHC-8) is a series of twin-engined, medium range, turboprop airliners. Introduced by de Havilland Canada (DHC) in 1984, they are now produced by Bombardier Aerospace. Since 1996, the aircraft have been known as the Q Series, for "quiet". Over 1000 Dash 8s of all models have been built. Bombardier forecasts a total production run of 1,192 units of all Dash8/QSeries variants through to the year 2016.

Saunders-Roe SR.N6



The U.S. Navy's PACV was based on the British (Saunders-Roe) SR.N5 ,built by Bell as the SK-5, and adapted for American military use in 1965. The SR.N6 was an extended version of the SR.N5, also used by other nations in military roles. Three were purchased by the U.S. Navy for operations in the emerging Vietnam War. After a period of getting the Navy crews used to operating the PACV out of their base in Coronado, California, adjustments were made through experience in the seas off San Diego to the model that would later be employed by all hovercraft, such as changes to the hovercraft skirt. The PACVs were first deployed in 1966 to Vietnam. Often called "Pac Vees", they were armed with a .50 calibre machine gun mounted on a rotational platform in the front, side mounted M60 machine guns, and often remote controlled M60s or grenade launchers in the stern. In addition, the crew, and often U.S. Army Green Berets and ARVN Rangers, riding on the side panels, employed assorted small arms such as M16s, M79 grenade launchers, various rifles, .45 pistols, M60s, claymores, and grenades. During PACV's first tour in Vietnam some basic light armor was added to the hovercraft to give it some protection from enemy fire.

PACVs conducted many successful missions on the Mekong Delta, Cat Lo, Plain of Reeds out of Moc Hoa in their initial tour.

The Navy withdrew the PACVs for overhaul in December 1966/January1967 and redeployed them to Vietnam in late 1967. The U.S. Army created its own version of the PACV in 1967 with some of the Navy's modifications from the experimental phase of 1966, calling it the ACV, for Air Cushion Vehicle. There were only 3 Navy PACVs, and 3 Army ACVs during the whole Vietnam War.

The PACV was too loud for patrol and interdiction missions on the coastline and waterways. However, after "Operation Quai Vat" (Vietnamese for Monster, which was what the Viet Cong called the PACVs) the PACV showed great prowess and capability in marshy terrain like the Plain of Reeds along south Vietnamese/Cambodian border.

In operation Quai Vat in November 1966, the PACV force brought its speed and firepower to bear on the Viet Cong, with many successful attacks and raids, taking prisoners and destroying Viet Cong sanctuaries. Afterwards, the success of operation Quai Vat formed the basis for stationing the Army's ACVs in the Plain of Reeds. It was found that the PACVs could move faster over the slick ground found in southwestern Vietnam, and over the border into Cambodia. Though the loud noise of the PACVs was still an issue, their speed made up for it in this otherwise difficult terrain, especially during the monsoon season. The search and destroy raids conducted out of Moc Hoa in November 1966 caught the Viet Cong by surprise and resulted in many Viet Cong deaths. With time, and the degree of threat that this new fast and fierce weapon brought with it, the handfull of PACVs and ACVs in Vietnam became major targets for the insurgents.

The Green Berets out of Moc Hoa became proponents of the PACV, being involved in many of their early operations.

Combat veteran, Spitfire Mk.Vb, (G-MKVB), BM597. One of 1000 aircraft built at Castle Bromwich against contract B981687/39, BM597 was delivered to No.37 M.U. at Burtenwood on 26 February 1942, being assigned to 315 Sqn on 7 May 1942 and on to 317 Sqn on 5 September 1942, both at Woodvale. On 13 February 1943, it suffered Cat B damage and was removed for repair on 28 February. It was ready for collection again on 2 June and No. 33 M.U. took delivery and on 9 June it was allocated to Vickers Armstrong for an undisclosed purpose. It returned to No.39 M.U. Colerne on 23 November before moving to No. 222 M.U.High Ercall (Packing Depot) on 4 January 1944 and then back to No. 39 M.U. on 14 April. It was stored there for almost a year until it was issued to No. 58 OTU, its last operational unit from which it was retired on 16 October 1945. It was then transferred to instructional airframe status at No. 4 S of TT, St Athen as 5713M.



Following St Athen, BM597 was assigned to Hednesford (1950-1955, Bridgenorth (1955-1960) and Church Fenton (1960-1989) as gate guardian. On 23 January 1967 it was dispatched from Henlow to Pinewood where it was used as the master for the moulds that were made to cast the fibre glass replicas used in the film ‘Battle of Britain’. It remained at Pinewood until August 1968 when it was returned to Henlow and finally to Church Fenton in 1969. Tim Routsis, the founder of Historic Flying, recovered the aircraft in 1989 as part of a deal with the RAF and sold it to HAC in 1993 with Historic Flying undertaking the complete restoration to original specification and flies now in the colours of 317 Squadron, though in an earlier camouflage paint scheme.



The HAC team are in contact with a number of Polish veterans that flew BM597 whilst in service with the Polish 315 (PK-C) and 317 (JH-C) Squadrons RAF. Squadron Leader Ludwik Martel and Squadron Leader Tadeuz Anderz were reunited with the aeroplane at the Old Hay Charity Fly-in in July 2000. From squadron records, other pilots who flew the aircraft were Sgt Slonski, P/O Widziszewski, P/O B. Semmerling, F/O H. Wyrozemski, F/S J. Adamiak, P/O S. Blok, P/O J Zbrozek, Sgt Alexsander Chudek, F/LT Waleriaw Jasiowowski and F/LT W.J. Zajac
F/LT Zajac flew BM597 on several occasions including acceptance checks and tests when BM597 was assigned to 315 Squadron in May 1942.
