No 73 Squadron was formed on the 1st of July 1917 at Upavon and was disbanded on the 2nd of July 1919. It was re-formed on the 15th of March 1937 with Hawker Fury's and then Gloster Gladiator's. They moved to Digby where they re-equipped with Hawker Hurricane's. The moved to France with No 1 Squadron as part of the Hurricane Wing of the Advanced Striking Force. they left France on the17th of June 1940 and they built up to Squadron strength again at Church Fenton.
The Squadron moved to Debden on the 5th of September 1940

The first serious incident in the programme occurred in January, 1971 when 001, flying at supersonic speed, experienced an engine surge which caused one of the movable ramps in the engine air intake to break free. Metal fragments were ingested into the engine, and considerable damage was caused, but all this damage was contained within the engine casing. The damaged engine was shut down and the aircraft returned on three engines to Toulouse where it made a normal landing.

Flew all from RAF Henswell as well as other Lincolnshire bases, equipt with most of the bombers of the day, Blenheims Hampdens, Lancs e.t.c But i'm interested in it as it also operated Lincolns

The mascot is the Lincoln Imp and I had to look up the motto "Thundering through the clear air".

54 SQUADRON

The badge combines features of the Arms of France and Flanders, scene of No 54's battles in World War One.

No 54 Squadron was formed on 16 May 1916 at Castle Bromwich and moved to France as a fighter squadron in December with Pups. A year later, these were replaced by Camels which, in addition to normal fighter and escort missions were engaged on low-level attacks on troops and transport behind the enemy lines until the end of the war. In January 1919, the squadron handed over its aircraft to No 151 Squadron and returned to the UK in February, where it remained a cadre unit until disbanded on 25 October 1919.

On 15 January 1930, No 54 was reformed at Hornchurch as a fighter squadron, flying Siskin two-seaters until the arrival of its Bulldogs between April and October. In September 1936, Gauntlets were received and in May 1937, Gladiators. Spitfires began to arrive in March 1939 and on the outbreak of World War Two were flown on defensive duties from Hornchurch. During the evacuation from Dunkirk in May 1940, the squadron flew patrols over the Belgian coast to intercept German raids on the port and beaches. After being heavily engaged in the first half of the Battle of Britain, No 54 was moved to Yorkshire early in September.

De Haviland Venom



The final Venom for the RAF was the single-seat FB.4 which first flew on 29 December 1953. It entered service in 1955 and 250 were built. It was powered by a single 5,150 lbf (22.9 kN) thrust de Havilland Ghost 105 turbojet engine. It also received an ejector seat and some modifications to its structure.
