Yeovilton Air Day - The Reds

Postby MOD » Sun Jul 14, 2013 7:34 pm

The weather, you would think, would have been perfect for an Air-Show this weekend with temperatures nudging 30 degrees.
BUT: It was awful !!! God help those poor volunteers in the Vulcan Village. I could only manage 10 minutes in their marquee. I have been in cooler saunas.... Yet people were queuing to get in.
It was far too hazy and that baking sun was in completely the wrong sector of the sky for photos. :(

Here are the Reds who were supreme as always. .. Phew!!

Thanks for looking. ;) BTW my Canon 450D is still having trouble in high UV scenarios like this weekend. It is still underexposing and then switches to overexposing by up to a full stop.
There; I think I have run out of all my excuses now. It couldn't possibly me me .... Could it?? ;)

Well you done better than me with your pics, took about 400 and only a handful were any good and that's relatively speaking ! It was far too hot for me and I left before the final showpiece .Did enjoy it though ,easy in and easy out !Liked the fast jet displays ,especially the F16 and Grippen with their flares ,why doesn't the Typhoon do that or has it not the capability to employ flares ?( maybe they think it so manoeuvrable that it doesn't need them ) I enjoyed the Vulcan but one small criticism, when it arrived for the start of it's display it came in from the left and slowly flew down the runway very quietly and I thought it's going to turn up the volume any second but it didn't :( it just pootled off and turned around to begin it's display with more panache,a bit of a damp squid arrival ( for me anyway )
Take only photographs, leave only footprints .

I had pretty much the same at Waddington it was pretty poor for a large portion of the day. I had to switch to manual focus in the end, my 70-300 was just hunting and couldn't focus on anything. I also spent an hour both days in the car over lunch, not a hot weather fan at all.

Thanks for posting Ian nice to the Reds back to a 9 ship.
In memory of a very dear friend - Mike Pearson

Very fond memories of Robbie Gilvary - DTs 1st Vulcan Captain who taught DT all he knew.

Acey I agree with your comments. I also left well before the BoB flight and the Commando attack arrived. I have never seen so many distressed people at an airshow since 1976!!

I started in the 'Press Tent' but there were a lot of negative comments re XH558 before it even started its display so I 'Made my excuses and left' together with the Aussie editor of an aircraft modelling magazine who had flown all the way from Oz just to see XH558 and Swordfish LS326 fly. He loved the Vulcan display but then again he had never seen 'Big Al' and especially DT perform in the late 80s and early 90s. I look at the huge following that XH558 has now and just wonder how much greater that support would be if those VDF pilots could give their far more interesting and photogenic displays.

Nothing "pants" about them at all Ian. I think they are great shots :ymapplause:

I had exactly the same problems as Pam during the Waddington show, compounded by the first time I had used the camera.

Great shots as always mate :D

Nice pics Ian. Definitely the hottest airshow I've been to in a long while.
Good to see you posting again.

Nice set, this year we have been blessed with the weather, that comes at a price....haze, also the smoke takes some time to clear, saying that you did well with the shots. Nice report.
