Dambusters 70th Thursday 16th May

Postby E3Sentry1975 » Mon Jun 03, 2013 10:43 am

This was an amazing night, I was stood in the field at the end of the runway along with possibly 500 or so other people.

Thanks Darren

I must have been stood not far from you (against the fence) :D , absolutely agree, amazing evening :ymapplause: . Can't remember the last time I saw so many people at Scampton (probably early 90's for their air show).

I know it's been asked before, but I'm too stupid to find it, but what are the two hatches for on top of the Lanc's fuselage and why are they open during flight?.

Just had another thought.....we know bird strikes cause havoc with a turbine engine, but if it hit a prop did the prop survive or did they have to feather the prop in a multi engined 'plane, and if a single engine, I suppose they jumped unless they could feather and glide to a field?

This was posted in response to a question on the BBMF Facebook page on 20 May 2013.
"The two hatches are left out to allow fresh air to flow through the aircraft as it gets very hot inside we do fly with them in if there is a chance of rain. This is why you see them fitted when she is on the ground as well to stop water getting in. Paul B"
