The Nimrod Thread...

Postby Saracenman » Sun Oct 26, 2008 4:57 pm

another of my faves :D

amazing to think that they are little more than glorified DH Comet 4s, and yet still have a long future ahead of them B-)

one question puzzles me - the bomb-bay; it can carry all manner of goodies, depending on the nature of the sortie, but...........

Image

how are they 'bombed-up'???

with the open doors being so close to the ground, they must be even more difficult to load than the HP Victor was. are they parked over some kind of pit as with the B52 that carried Bell X1?

or is there much crawling around and swearing by ground crews at Kinloss? =))

sm

edit:

just found some excellent pictures and footage of the new Nimrod MRA4.............

how do you get a Nimrod to Woodford for conversion to MRA4? by AN124 of course! :ymapplause:

and XV246,clearly showing the original DH Comet 4 fuselage that lurks beneath :D some with XM603 in the background too :(

From memory at St Mawgan (mid 70's) - most armament in them days was sonar buoys .. presumably posted into allocated hatches.

The first pic of what appears to be a bomb rack.. was I guess used for torpedos ? (No doubt I guess wrongly ;) )

Nice addition there SM.

Take off vid looked a bit interesting... maybe the pilot temporarily underestimated the speed. Not being a Nimrod anorak... what are those little fins on the tailplane ?

i don't think they have anything to do with aerodynamics, more to do with the wiggly amp stuff on board

there's that picture again - it probably won't matter what aircraft we're discussing - you can post that same picture every time coz it's got the lot in it! =))

that was the time when Nimrod held a World record - with sidewinders attached, Nimrod effectively became the World's largest fighter B-)

Nimrod AEW prototype Naddy ;)

if the gov't had been prepared to stick with it and support the "buy British" idea, we wouldn't have had to end up with 707s with woks on the roof :(

Ahhh ok thanks SM.

I'm so used to seeing the regular Nimrod that the prototype looks strange (sorry SM) but that's the same for cars etc - you get used to seeing them around and when you see a different version you dont really like it.

But I must add that my 4 yr old daughter was sat next to me and she said 'whats that plane doing with a nut on the front of it? It needs chopping off and a proper plane bit putting on it'

=))
