101 Sqn VC10s Brize

This was my last visit to 101 Sqn Base Hangar and Flightline. I hope there will be more opportunities for a visit before they all end up at Bruntingthorpe. Some of these aircraft have already been scrapped/parts recovered.

Very nice to see - I seem to remember going here in the 80's - I also remebering going to the dump where there were some derelict VC10's, a Hunter & Wessex.

I remember being told that several of the ex-BA VC10s were scrapped, after an initial inspection, due to excessive corrosion. Not in the more usual places but around the toilet areas. This was not down to what you might at first think, but to the chemical cleaners that were used in the toilets which were, apparently, very corrosive. :-o

Several never even made the trip from Abingdon (to Brize) where they were initially stored. I seem to remember that some of the airframes were parked in the open for a very long time before being scrapped/parts recovered.

You are correct!

RAF EOD cut one up explosively! I expect it's on Youtube somewhere! ;)
