70th anniversary of the US Airforces 'over here'

Postby MOD » Thu Apr 26, 2012 6:55 pm

Picking up on this month's (May) Classic Aircraft magazine's souvenir issue; it is 70 years since those Yankee flyboys arrived 'en-masse' in the UK - and thankfully for us iconic aircraft supporters - they are still here :ymapplause: (but for how much longer?)

My personal favourite regular visitor is the incredible B-52. This is a truly iconic aircraft and has seen action in several theatres of war; from Vietnam to GWII.

What is your favourite American aircraft to be based here (including on TDY) in the last 70 years?

Love the Buff and the Bone (plus anything noisy really lol)

Hard to believe I used to see B52's when I was at first school in Marham village. Even harder to believe they had already been around for ages before that :-o

Great and most definately ICONIC aircraft :ymapplause:

Thanks for the shots Ian :D

Do you even have to ask ;) :D
And I know they were based here as the first wave of path finders on D-day set off from RAF N. Witham :)

I do have a massive soft spot for B-25s as well though. But don't know if they were here or not :-?

As for B-52s, I've only seen one and a half (the half being one landing at Waddington a couple of years ago before going U/S on show day :)) ).

It was fantastic to see the BBMF one on Tuesday! :)
Especially when it decided to buzz around where we were standing after the rest of the flight had done their bit...

Mr West, we used to get regular detachments from your wonderful Air National Guard!

You never know WHERE those Okies are
gonna show up :p

Tell me, Dave, how did you develop your
enchantment with the Corsair II, hmmm???

I agree she's a superb flying machine, btw,
with an amazingly good combat record, too!

By working on them alongside your ANG guys, (please note they have weapons aboard in three of my pictures, the twin seater was actually arriving from the US on a Saturday). They are like our Jaguar, a PROPER Armourers Aeroplane, a damned good BOMB TRUCK, loved by their Pilots and Groundcrew alike! I shall have a dig around and scan some more pictures for your delictation.

I too miss the F-111 and EF-111. (Aardvark and Sparkvark). UH was a great place to shoot takeoffs and landings at both ends and also taxyway shots - if you knew where to go. :ymapplause: BTW I have just learned that the US never used the nickname AArdvark until they had grounded them in 1996. It is the Aussies we have to thank for making this nickname 'stick' as they had been using this name for so long the US began to adopt it - but not until they had grounded theirs which seems a tad strange.

There are some interesting details of official designations and nicknames here.

http://www.uswarplanes.net/aircraftnames.html

BTW Dave the nickname SLUF doesn't appear to have been used by the Yanks.
BTWII Helen I just knew what your response would be. ;) :ymapplause:

The trouble with the question I posed at the start is that it is a bit like saying "Which is your favourite grandchild?" :-o

They were all worthy in their own way and the ones that make the biggest impact are those that you first saw at an impressionable age. Which is why my favourite Yankee aircraft are all a bit long in the tooth now - a bit like me really. :(

Anyone for the SR-71, F-4 Phantom, B1Bone, etc etc?

Then how do I know it immediately without
having to go look it up????????

Maybe not an OFFICIAL name from USAF or
USN, but still in general use by those who
flew her in both branches...........

That's not really 'general use' as in common use by the general public (as it was over here). I don't know from where it originated Danfth but if you go to the above link http://www.uswarplanes.net/aircraftnames.html you will see that the nickname SLUF is not mentioned.

Eye-Bee..............

Those are the Official Names, not the
nicknames!!!!!!!!!

Quote from Wiki:::::::::::

The A-7 Corsair II was tagged with the nickname "SLUF" ("Short Little Ugly Fucker") by pilots.[8]

You are going to have to take this up with the US webmasters of this site. ;) No mention of SLUF as a nickname (for the Corsair) but BUFF is apparently widely accepted as a nickname for the B-52. Go figure.

Boeing's "Strato" name this time combined with the "Fortress" name for the longest serving bomber
