Thanks guys :) really pleased you all like it. I'm working on a similar tribute to Sean Cunningham that I will post as soon it's done.

Cheers,

Thanks Mayfly, much appreciated :)
Had a little play with the painting as I wasn't happy with the portrait, he looked a little too rugged and lacked spark in his eyes. I've never painted anyone as difficult as Jon before, he looks different on every photograph of him! I think I chose quite a difficult picture to go off but I wanted that pose rather than a face on portrait as I think it is a little more poignant. I've included the photo I used so you guys can have a look, I'd really appreciate your views as the painting is going to his widow and I want her to be happy that it's him. I hope I've got him a little closer this time!!!!!!

Copied to see the 2 portraits together

I'm sure Jon will look different to Emma the he does to us TJ.

It is a rugged photo you have chosen. I certainly like the second one better - however if you are trying for a very close likeness to the photo I think his chin is perhaps a little to strong and the highlight on his cheek bones a little too bright making me focus on them instead of his eyes - which to me look spot on.

PS I may edit my comments the more I look at the picture.

I certainly agree Jiggy :ymapplause: and I am being very picky as I understand where TJ is coming from.

I think just the effort on your part is
a wonderful thing, Terry.......

The only suggestion I can think of is
to see if you can't find some film or
video of him so you can catch him
speaking or reacting to something --
in other words, the Animation of his
face.

I think it's fine as-is, but to really
capture his essence, you need to see
how his facial expressions worked in
real life.

I understand he was a happy, jovial
and sweet-natured kind of a fellow.....

EDIT: My above comment is ONLY for if you
are still not quite satisfied and looking to
go beyond what is already, in my opinion,
a really fine rendition!

My comment is NOT a criticism!

Us mere mortals can only dream of such talent MF ;)

Rarely do I see something that I am just completely blown away by. I have been nothing but impressed with every piece of Terry's work but this one? WOW.
Makes me want to publish it for all to see (that's how impressed I am) although I obviously wouldn't dream of it.

I agree with Kev. We are so lucky to have talent like this on here and of having the opportunity to express our opinions.

As the man once said 'I know nothing about art - but I know what I like' and that certainly applies to me as well.

Keep thrilling us Terry. ;)

I like the photo used - not sure if it shows him focused heading for display or knackered having just done one, :)) but it's natural and not one those posy shots so often taken.

Terry

I am unable to see the images whilst at work, but rest assured I'm sure they are stunning as usual!

I can't wait to look in the morning when I get home!

Thanks guys, your comments are really encouraging :) Iconic is the only place I've posted this painting as I trust you guys a lot more than any other site and you always make me feel good about about my work which is a definate plus :)
I've had a play around with the chin and dulled the cheek bones down a little, thanks to the observations of Mayfly, which I think were spot on. I'll get it photographed today and post the changes as soon as I can. I think it is a fair comment that Jon's widow, Emma will see him as different to what we would see him, all I can do is present a reasonable representation of him along with the Red Arrows and hope the finished result will be acceptable to her and she will see it as a small but fitting tribute to him. Sean Cunningham, I'm happy to say is proving much easier to paint.

Cheers,

Terry

Pleased you found my comments constructive TJ I would never intentional offend. You could paint a Spitfire with a Hurricane tail I wouldn't be able to spot the difference :)) but faces I find much easier. :) Theres no doubt at all that it's Jon tho' and believe me I have seen portraits that look nothing like the intended victim :p

It's very simple, you've done him proud and I'm sure his wife will greatly appreciate your wonderful gesture!

Well done Sir.

For something a little different, this is a painting I started in 1999 but never got around to finishing it until now.

Much better [in my humble opinion] the little less highlight on the cheek bones has open his eyes!! :-BD I'm sure Emma will love it,

:YMDAYDREAM: :X :-O How could that have taken 12 years to finish such a master piece!!!

Edit:::::: in fact TJ I am now astounded just how close to that photo Jon now looks you should be justifiably proud :ymapplause:
