Wow ... is my considered opinion.. :ymapplause:

However I do see exactly what Sooty means. That Spit does not appear to be flying as though it was the one that initially scored the hit on the 109. Could you just lose the rear two puffs of smoke? And perhaps but on a bit of left aileron/rudder to show he is/was tracking the 109 rather than flying straight at it amidships?

Nit-picking really... ;)

I see what you mean. As the pilot described it, he fired and hit the 109 with a long canon shot and then turned to avoid getting in front of the rest of the 109s (banking hard right and then hard left later). The plan was to show he had a few strikes and then banked right (not wanting to be the target of other 109s behind) but I can see that's not really apparent from what I have here. I'll have to think that through a bit. Maybe just losing those two smoke puffs may do it as you say.

Len would I be right in thinking you paint in layers?

:)) Add wool jacket and bear skin parka for this country!

But yes, to the actual question. I do whatever I can in layers so I can change things easier later (like this smoke issue for instance). Some things just can't be done in layers but usually, yes.

I'm of the opinion that a little artistic
license is not a bad thing.....

I'm also of the opinion that you can
over-think something to death...

Looking forward to seeing the changes you make Len, from your description of what was actually happening at the time it makes sense to me! ;)

Here's some updates. I tried two variations with the smoke, let me know which you like better.

Here's some larger ones. I took some blur off the 109, added a bit to the Spitfire.

I don't want to over do it on the Spitfire because the viewer/camera is traveling with the Spitfire so the relative speed would be almost the same. A little helps it blend in nicely though.

I'll be seeing the pilot soon so I'll ask him how much wear and dirt it should have. It was almost a new aircraft so I don't think it should have too much. I'll check...

Not sure if it' was intentional or the effect of removing a layer but I definitely prefer the additional detail on the ME109 cockpit of the revised edition and in fact I prefer the one with less smoke. :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause:

Len

If you go for the version with less smoke it would appear that the German Pilot was VERY quick at jettisoning his canopy. But with the extra, earlier puff of smoke it at least looks as though he took a couple of seconds to consider bailing out!

Thanks everyone! I'll think on it for a bit and then I'll have to make up my mind :)

Doug said the canopy flew off the same instant it was hit. Either the canon shell blew it off or the pilot was already reaching for the handle when the shells hit. But the average viewer doesn't know that up front so I have to consider that...

I'm thinking............

I like seeing the ME better defined......

I like more smoke...........

The Spit might be new, but couldn't it
have some oil and exhaust stains?

It's just too "Shiney"!

These aircraft didn't stay "New" very long!

I still think this is a Great Moment in Time!

That you very much everyone! If anyone has a few nice clear color images of Spitfires with wear during wartime feel free to post :) I have a couple but more is better.

I'll be visiting the pilot probably next weekend so after that I'll give it one more go and it'll be done.

Then on to Don Laubman's Spitfire. He's been waiting patiently.

Stunning. :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause:

Len, when you sell one of these pictures do you provide a 'potted history' of the action and who the protagonists are/were?

Mod

PS:
I just caught myself staring at the blank wall behind my PC monitor as I sit here typing this. Mmmmm :-? . I wonder if Mrs Mod and the girls fancy chipping in together for an early 65th birthday present :D

What I really like about this picture, as well as the dynamics of the subject, is the widescreen, almost landscape, aspect ratio. Or am I gibbering again :(

Well, I think it's pretty damned good!

I'm happy we might have had some tiny

If the right people see it, it WILL!

Yes, I definitely provide all the info for the people involved. I'm going to visit the pilot this weekend to get him to sign the original.

A very special deal to anyone from here of course if you'd like one :)

I ended up changing the aspect ratio at the last minute, I'm glad you like it.

Thanks everyone! Now to start on Don Laubman's.
