XM655's Autumn EGR

Postby Sooty655 » Sun Oct 30, 2011 6:51 pm

Yesterday we moved 655 over to runway 05 to give the four noise-makers a little gentle exercise. All went well and we are pleased to report we have a fully serviceable aircraft. :D

Unusually, we made this a closed event, and we have spent the last month saying NO to requests to visit the EGR, without giving the reason. Now all can be revealed. We had made arrangements for our handling of XM655 to be assessed by a suitably qualified observer. There could only be one first-choice for that task, so no prizes for guessing who we asked. :-?

It was quite a nerve-wracking experience for those of us who were most closely involved, but I am pleased to report that we were able to satisfy our chosen invigilator that we could be trusted to handle the old girl properly. \:D/ \:D/

Now we can stop worrying about the EGR and start preparing for the winter maintenance programme.

:)) :)) :)) None of you looked nervous!!!

Is there anything special planned for this winter Sooty or just general maintenance to keep her in the lovely condition she is in?

The engine inspections of the last two winters have taken a lot of time, which means we have a backlog of smaller jobs which must get some attention this year. Several of the PFC's need work to cure hydraulic leaks, the rudder control rigging has a mis-alignment somewhere (probably the yaw damper actuator), the Houchin is overdue for a service, and as we found yesterday (luckily without incident) the Coleman doesn't seem to have brakes any more. And of course the painting programme will continue whenever the weather is suitable.

No big headline stuff, but a busy winter none-the-less.

Not to mention: tyres (including wheels and brakes), inboard elevon trailing edges, undercarriage recuperation (big job - involves jacking the aircraft on our 1940s uneven Wellington aircraft pan), ejection seat harness repairs, frequency changer repairs/replacement, AAPP oil leak, alternator load sharing, etc, etc.

A 47 year old Vulcan that hasn't flown for 27 years is a high-maintenance machine - sorry Dee! If it was a 'she' we'd have traded 'her' in for a younger model by now!

Even so, RHV, it is THE POWER OF LOVE
that keeps her so nice.......

Without that, you'd just stay home on the
weekends, right?

And It's Always Something, isn't it?

I for one am happy you do it!
