F35 (J.S.F.) from the Cockpit

All military (past & present) aircraft talk, photos, videos etc

Completely out of turn here, but I really
believe the VTOL F-35 sort of stands on the
shoulders of the Harrier. It will be the next
leap in technology for that type of aircraft.

I would LOVE it if Dave's friend Pete would
tell us just what you ask, Ian, but perhaps
he can't -- YET.........

Got to say, though, that a trip across the
bubbly waves to Jolly Old certainly sounds
to ME like a perfect Operational Testing
Exercise, don't you think???????????

Of course, if they just wanted to fly as far as
Bangor, I wouldn't mind either!

You are Right!

Besides, all three versions have flown
across the USA already -- just under
3,000 miles.

Pond jump is only a little further!

What's a few hundred miles between
friends????????????

Public Relations alone ought to do it!

(Oh, and they CAN stop in Bangor if
they'd like....)

Yes he was on the OCU as OC B Flight and before that he was on 1 (F) Sqn and was involved in bombing Kosovo!

He then left the RAF and joined BAe as it was at Warton and was a Development Test Pilot on the Harrier!

Latest Milestone::::::::::::::::::::

NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND, LAKEHURST, N.J. -- Navy test pilot Lt. Christopher Tabert takes to the sky July 27 in an F-35C test aircraft launched by a steam catapult for the first time. CF-3 is the designated carrier suitability testing aircraft, and is in Lakehurst for catapult and jet blast deflector testing. The F-35C is the carrier variant of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and is distinct from the F-35A and F-35B variants. It has larger wing surfaces and reinforced landing gear for slower catapult launch and landing approach speeds and deck impacts associated with the demanding carrier take-off and landing environment. The F-35C is undergoing test and evaluation at NAS Patuxent River prior to eventual delivery to the fleet.

Great pics Dave. That is one interesting helmet.

Is the F-35 cleared for a full STOVL display yet?

Pete is working on the C model that we will get in this country, no STOVL capability, a true carrier aircraft in the OLD sense! ;)

I'll tell you, the thing I can't wait for
is to see video of Pete's version
actually landing/taking off from an
actual aircraft carrier!

I know they're doing the trials, but
they are all from the LAND!

Indeed, they are "playing"with a stationary carrier flight deck!

I will send him an email. ;)

D4th, he had his first flight on Wednesday and sent this picture!

I truly believe down to the soles of
my feet that this aircraft, in all three
iterations, will be a joy to those that
fly her!

Time will tell, as it always does, but
this really looks to be a wonderful
flying machine!

(...oh, and I STILL think Pete has a
Great Job!)
