Unknown Mustangs. Help.

Postby MOD » Wed Jul 20, 2011 6:22 pm

I am still trying to catalogue my old slide collection and I keep coming across unknown aircraft that I photographed in the 80s and early 90s. However most of my records have been destroyed so I have to rely on my memory to identify them. :(

These are a couple of Mustangs. The first was photographed in France, that much I do remember, but what was its identity? Who owned it and where is it now? This isn't so easy as many Warbirds change their identities several times depending on the owner's whim.

The second is a real puzzle as I have no recollection at all of the location where I took this 'Arty Farty' shot, other than it was in the UK.

No1 is F-AZIE in France.

No2 ???

You're right, they are both Mustangs! :p

Yes I've fired off a couple of e-mails but, if past experience is anything to go by, the replies can take quite some time, if I receive one at all.

Thanks Pam. I did see that site but it didn't fill in all the gaps. The only photos I have come across are of Short Fuse Salle and none at all since 2002.

I found this on warbirdregistry.org

'Franklin Deveax/Apache Aviation, Dijon, France, May 1991.
- shipped to France from Chino, CA, 1991.
Franklin Deveax/LAFLA, Dijon-Longvic, France, Sept. 1, 1992-1996.
- Registered as F-AZIE.
- Flew as 511483/The Best Years Of Our Lives.
- Badly damaged by inflight fire, forced landing, 1993.
- Rebuilt as 415622/AJ-T/"Short Fuse Salle", 1994.'

I must have shot this just after delivery as it is not yet marked as 'The Best Years of Our Lives'..

Where is it now?

I really wish I could help you, Ian, but
it's one of those things where someone
associated with the aircraft will look at
the pic and just KNOW!

You've got to go fishing for that second
one, I'm afraid...........

That second 'Stang is really beginning to annoy me now as I can remember seeing Martin Shaw in the Stearman (tail on the far right) and is that his Morgan or Marlin just behind?

I have an awful feeling I will wake up at 2.00am shouting 'Cottesmore' or something equally baffling to Mrs W.

Ian is the mustang called 'Old Red Nose'? Could she have been over here for a while?

Pam that just has to be 'Old Red Nose'. But where and when is now the question?

It was definately in the Uk in the early 90s as it seems to have been taken using my EOS600 on Kodachrome 64.

I wonder if it was Upper Heyford in 1991? I'll keep searching.

The latest photo I've seen was on Airliners.net I think it was, taken about 2008 and it said 'Nice to have her back home again' which doesn't necessarily mean she was abroad before that of course.
