Dunno why but I'd always assumed that XM655 used "contaminated fuel" i.e fuel that for some reason could not be used in a flying aircraft due to the strict rules but was fine for an aircraft that was fired up and stayed on the runway.

It certainly shouldn't be, given the price we have to pay for it. We have tried to persuade one of the oil refiners to sponsor us, but without success. ~x(

I've just uploaded a collection of images to the XM655 Photo Gallery. They were taken on Saturday at Wellesbourne while XM655 was being re-fuelled. I also took several detailed photos inside the cockpit of many of the instruments and controls predominantly on the rear workstations.
http://vulcanxm655.fotopic.net/

If any AEO or Nav Officers viewing the images feels able to provide detailed narratives for me then I'd be delighted....

There was a good reason..... for the emphasis on the AEO workstation. I spent the weekend in the company of the daughter of Sqn Leader Albert Gamble - AEO of the fated Vulcan XA897!

Contaminated fuel is a no no we only use the best Jet a-1. As sooty has stated the big fuel companies don't seem interested in helping us with a couple of thousand gallons of fuel which to them is a very small drop in the ocean.

Bovril is referring to a very active day at Wellesbourne yesterday. A couple of highlights were the delivery of some inert ordnance, courtesy of our friends at Portsmouth Aviation:

1,000lb inert warhead with an attached 114 tail unit mounted on a bomb stillage:
Image

A 117 retard tail unit, partially opened:
Image

Also donated to us was a 28lb practice bomb (I forgot to photograph it - d'oh) and a couple of fuze units - a 952 Mk 1 nose unit and a 947 Mk 1 tail fuze. Our grateful thanks to the MD and Weapons Integration engineers at Portsmouth Aviation!

The bomb is a nice addition to our seven store carrier:
Image

We also had some success with fabricating and preparing to fit two steel repairs over cracks on the end plates inboard of the boundary layers on both wings. Here's the unpainted repair before fitting to the starboard boundary layer end plate (it's below the pipe insulation shoved into the intake to keep nesting birds out!):
Image

Richard Galazka fabricated the repairs and Fred Barter is helping with the fitment.

Bovril's tug is looking a sounding a lot better now - we won't know for certain until we attach a Vulcan to the back of it.... We plan to do that a few days before Wings & Wheels although our American Coleman aircraft tug is on standby just in case.....!

Looking forward to 26 June, I just hope the weather is going to be a bit kinder to us than at present!
