Gloster Whittle

Postby Mayfly » Sat May 14, 2011 10:10 pm

15th May 2011 sees the 70th anniversary of the first official flight of Frank Whittles’ Gloster Whittle E28.

Whittle had witnessed the aircraft carry out a couple of hops at Brockworth airfield the previous April but the aircraft was moved to RAF Cranwell for its first official flight. The test pilot was Gerry Sayer.

The 70th anniversary celebrations are being held at Cranwell tomorrow 15th May and will end with a flypast by [I believe] both of MB Metors, as best I can make out at 15.30.

The "special" Iconic header features a replica set up on a roundabout just outside Lutterworth.

Lutterworth is very proud of its connection with Whittle. What the local tourist information centre don't tell visitors is that Whittle only went to Lutterworth because he had a contract with British Thompson Houston to build and test his designs. After an early engine blew up on their test bed in Rugby, they despatched the whole programme (and Whittle with it) to an old foundry they owned in Lutterworth because they didn't want their factory damaged further.

Well worth remembering I think. Whittle did so well in his endeavours despite being told by his RAF bosses to stop having pipe dreams [my words]
