Thanks for the link Jim,

I would be interested to know more details. Older seats would have you out of the aircraft and separated from the seat in half that time. A little more sophisticated trial equipment than they used to have!

Ah, but in the seats haste to remove the crew member from the impending disaster, they did have a bit of a habit of inflicting some damage of their own I believe.

Maybe the 'softer' start which is more spinal cord friendly is what is increasing the time line a bit.

Comments please oh Whizz Bang expert.

I was just advised that the 'whizz bang' expert has now been split into the 'Whizz' expert and the 'bang' expert.

Back injuries [compression of the spine] were/are the main medical concern, but compared to not getting out at all a small price to pay, That's how the rocket pack came about - it gives a extra thrust for higher speed ejections but also provides a smoother initial ejection sequence. Whilst you will never stop ancillary injuries from ejection due to 'G,' how you strap yourself in, eg: straps need to be tight to hold you firmly in the seat but not too tight that there is pressure on the spine and they cause you to 'hunch over' whilst sitting, adopting the correct posture plays a larger part - helped these days by having head and arm restraints as well as leg.

Of course it does depend to what point they timed the 3 seconds.

Modern seats from the Harrier onwards have intelligent systems, they know the speed and angle and attitude of the aircraft at the point of ejection. The system has the ability to make adjustments to the venturis on the rocket pack and this can even involve the seat turning in flight to enlarge the separation distance from the aircraft and the proximity with the ground. :D

I will contact my friend on the F35 programme and see if he can send some information. ;)
