struggling to remember which was the first - choice of two

was either to Helsinki (no idea what a/c) or more likely my one and only flight on a Lockheed Deathstar to Turin, for a skiing holiday

should have paid more attention

We were taken for an air experience flight in an Anson when I joined the RAF Apprentices at Halton. Prior to the flight we were given a list of instructions of what to do in an emergency including bailing out.
The last line read as follows.
Should your parachute fail to open. On reaching the ground, report sick immediately.

Tangmere about 1961on ATC annual Camp. Flew in a Vickers Varsity to Gaydon a V-Bomber base at the time I think Valiants. Brilliant flight in the bomb aimers blister all to myself, what a view.

Gat Port Airwick to Athens courtesy of Dan Dare Scareways on a DH Comet. Spent most of flight watching a fastener on the wing rotating..............

My first flight was in a converted Anson in 1962 from RAF Scampton. It was the Station Communication Aircraft better known as the pilots taxi. A mate of mine, (an Irishman named Montgomery would you believe), had broken his leg and had been moved to RAF Hospital Halton. I heard that a flight was going to Halton to take some pilots down to visit their respective pregnant wives and I managed to get the afternoon off and captains permission in order to visit my friend. It was great, a loverly sunny day light winds and a grass landing and take off from Halton. A very nice afternoon indeed. And my friend had just been transferred home for sick leave hours before so I didn't get to see him.
