Low 5 Sqn Lightning Cyprus

This picture was taken by Dave Henchie who was SATCO at Akrotiri at the time.

Now I know why the F6's strakes had fibreglass tips...

Nice isn't it!

Interesting to see the AIRBRAKES open ;)

I haven't seen it before. Just seems to sum up the Lightning. Thanks MOD.

Do you like me suspect it's been photoshopped to make it look like a low pass, then in fact it's about to land?????????

No I suspect it's genuine and the airbrakes were used to keep the speed reasonable and not damage the gear and doors!

A reason to have the airbrakes out is to cause extra drag and thus have the engines at a higher power and thus they sit in the more responsive part of the power band... at the end of the runway he would have selected full power and then burner to pull into the vertical and selected a/b in and got that power very quickly at the same time as loosing the drag, thus even better acceleration.

Drag v power is a useful thing in certain situations, on finals is one, hence land flap settings which are often mostly drag and thus again you have the engines in the more responsive power area (on the Conway that is in about the 82% HPRPM are)... so, if you have to go around you increase the power and select take-off flap and you have the power very quickly.

Does that make sense?

Shame we are such suspicious people these days that we always assume photoshop! LOL Great pic!

Seems to me the Buc pilots used their
brakes in a similar way......

No question about it being real.

I believe this is Brunty's own 904 beating up, either Binbrook or Warton:

EDIT: It is XS928 (Warton's Gate gurad) and it is at Warton. (cheers matey ;) )

OK, had it confirmed now.

It's XP693 (Now in SA) at Warton in 1990, the Pilot is Colin Rae during his last sortie before retiring.

Cheers!!
