Did a tour of the Red Arrows hangar last year. Fascinating to see how they're swapping round the limited number of planes, and using spares when possible from retired aircraft.

Would love to go back, if not to see the 617Sqdn related stuff, like Nigger's grave, and the dining room that's almost as it was, wall decor-wise, apparently.

Hawker Hunter Aviation RAF Scampton

Postby MOD » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:44 pm

Thanks to Mick (HHA Chief Engineer) I managed to wangle a visit to Hawker Hunter Aviation Ltd (HHA). I was accompanied by Dave (XPL) and you will have seen Dave's shots on his thread, which I have avoided highjacking. ;)

This was a rare opportunity to see some ex-military fast jets that are in private hands which are not often seen by the general public as they don't generally 'do' displays (too expensive) but earn their keep by flying on contract work.EDIT * See Mick's post below.

BTW this visit was very much a 'one off' as the guys are too busy to normally allow tours. If you have seen Dave's photos you will see the rather cramped conditions in the 2 hangars.

Buccaneer S2B. 208 Sqn Lossiemouth's 'Famous Grouse'. Last seen by me in Desert camo..

Nice pics Ian, thanks for posting, enjoyed taking yourself and Dave around our rather packed hangars, one small correction though to your intro. HHA have both civil and military registered aircraft. The military registered airframes are removed from the civ reg. The military aircraft operate under an initiative called MRCOA - Military Registered Civil Owned Aircraft and do not come under CAA control at all but are are regulated by the MAA and the TAA (Type Airworthiness Authority). We are regulated and audited by both organisations - as a minimum annually by each. In addition the military will inspect and audit any other base we operate from. last year we were audited 5 times, still keeps you on your toes.
