Mildenhall Air Fetes may .... come back?

Postby MOD » Tue Feb 01, 2011 2:54 pm

It was posted on a forum recently, although I now can't find it, that the Air Fetes are due to restart in 2013. This is purely a rumour!!

I wrote to the Public Affairs office and received this e-mail. In view of the somewhat terse nature of the reply I guess quite a few people have contacted them regarding this rumour. Anyway here is their reply:

"There has been some discussion, but nothing has been decided, and there are no firm plans in place at this time. If it is decided the base will have an air fete, it will be marketed through traditional means well in advance of the event ."

Let's be honest even if by some miracle it does return it could hardly be like the Mildenhalls of old, there just aren't the variety of aircraft around nowadays, still the burghers would be worth a trip by themselves :)

They have had talks with other venues to see what format [organisationally] they take these days so the intent is there.

Yeah Pam they are definately dipping their toes in the water. ;) I wouldn't rule out 2013 but it is only a rumour at this stage.

AC1 I am not prepared to go cannibal at this stage and feast on the good burghers of Mildenhall but their 'Sloppy Joe' BURGERS are another thing entirely. ;)

Cool, that'll annoy the locals as I seemed to remember it taking about 4 hours just to get back to the A1 when I went with my Dad in the late 80's.

Yes it did get a bit busy,we always used to spend the previous two weeks walking/climbing mountains in The Western Highlands of Scotland where we could go whole days on the hills without seeing a single person ! the culture clash of going to The Hall was quite extreme after the empty roads and hills of Scotland !

Well we were never really bothered by the dreaded wee midges, May is a bit early for them but I do remember having to walk up and down the road near Crianlarich Station cos we had 3 hours to kill while waiting for a train home and the sods wouldn't leave us alone , this was after travelling up from Bromley the previous night and after climbing Ben More 3851 ft and Stob Binnein 3822 ft on a hot june day we just didn't need that ! I don't remember the Burgers because I wasn't allowed "junk food" but despite that warning from my Mum to my Dad I always managed to squeeze him for a bag of onion rings which I remember being particularly tasty! Then there's the donuts........... =P~

Sorry.... anyway, yes, not sure what year it was we went but the Blackbird was up and they had a display team which I think was the Red Arrows, did the Red's display there?

For a second I read that as MIDGETS .. like that brilliant Victor Meldrew moment when the 2 girls complain that the bathroom is full of MIDGES so Victor charges in, with a rolled up newspaper, to find 3 midgets having a shave ...

If USAFE put their weight behind this then I think you/we will be pleasantly surprised. They do still have lots of interesting aircraft, unlike the RAF - shortly to be a six fast jet Squadron airforce. ie 1 Tornado and 5 Typhoon squadrons.

Thanks MOD, it certainly would be brilliant to have it back.

It's really bugging me now trying to remember what years I went!

I know the first time we went something crashed, no idea what it was but it was a big bang and a lot of black smoke, that's about as much as a 3 or 4 year old can take in, I don't think I was much older than that!

When did they stop flying the Lightning at Mildenhall because I seem to remember one being there the second time we went, well, something MUCH noisier than a Blackbird was there and I didn't like the noise at such a tender age so I presumed it must have been a Lightning?

Yep, the collision was in 86!

I remember watching it but NOT taking any pictures, it just didn't seem the right thing to do! :(
