Thank god the crew are OK.

What do they do with aircraft that crash into the sea, will they lift it?

Very glad to see they are apparently both OK, if it was at low level over the coast as seems to be the case, I suspect it may well have been caused by a birdstrike!

They will ONLY lift it out if the enquiry needs answers!

Would they still leave it if it had live ordnance on board ?

That would depend upon the depth it's lying at and what the ordnance was, oh and how close it is to habitation.

It will depend on how accessible it is really and if it's a hazard to shipping the depth of water etc - one the best jobs I had to do was go out on to Holbeach range to disarm a downed Harrier - but trudging through the mud banks was hard work :((

Squeal Piggy!

Question for Mayfly... sorry this is going off-topic a little but I am interested. What did you have to remove from that downed Harrier at Holbeach then and for what purpose did those things need to be removed for?

No, I think it was Jim Hunter as the WO and Al Swan was OC Arm.

The Harrier had come down on the mus flats as opposed to out at sea so the bits need to be recovered - bearing in mind he was on a range we weren't sure what if anything he dropped or fired so had to make sure any and all explosives were removed/safe before the flod plod could begin. IIRC it was carrying 28lbers as a bomb load and 30mm rounds

Was it the one that shot itself down with a 30mm ricochet off the old ship hulk target? :D
