MR2's have already gone with those not allocated to museums being chopped up already , R1's go in March/April with 2 allocated for museums [Duxford and East Midlands Aeropark] and the final 1's destination is uncertain [was allocated for Newark Air Museum but they can no longer afford her] IIRC .

If/when the Nimrods at Woodford are broken up, XM603 will probably go the same way. :(

XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

I would think that the MR4s will be offered for sale, with a little conversion work, they would make good airliners! :p

Heard on the grapevine.
The CONDEMS are getting quotes to have them converted so they can be operated from aircraft carriers.

I heard yesterday that BAE have been directed to break up the MRA4s forthwith so alas those on the line won't be completed.

No sign yet of those RC-135s but I see that a new list of which three are due has been published!

There were rumours that NAM were either moving next door or buying/leasing more ground next door. I also read they explained it wasn't just about not affording to purchase her, it was also about not being able to source spares to replace the bit the RAF would take out.

As for scraping the MRA4s it wouldn't surprise me, if not fit for purpose how can you sell them on? [not that I am aware if the problems have been fixed or not, depends on which report you read]

NAM's issue was to do with the fact that the wings would have to come off for transport.

As for moving next door, their problem is that the land that formed their original site is owned by the same people who own the showground and allegedly they charge an arm and a leg for it, while the new land belongs to the museum. Consequently, I believe that NAM is quite keen to move onto the area where its new hangar is, but it would be a tight fit and it would mean giving up several useful buildings. Plus, of course, there's the small matter of access, which is currently via the showground land.

... at least that's how I hear it!

I wrote to my MP about scraping the MRA4 - he asked questions of the secretary for equipment etc, whatever his fancy title is - I haven't got the letter to hand at the moment, but basically he said that a major factor in the decision to scrap them is what it would cost in the future.... reading between the lines it appears they were far from as they would be required for operational requirements.

Rock and hard comes to mind - decried for making the decision to scrap them or being accused of wasting more money in a few years time or even worse allowing crews to fly tham when not fit for purpose... :(

Calm down, something had to give and it was at least 8 years late and vastly over budget!

ALL new contracts should have time limits and fixed prices agreed before signing!
