Great job in doing som preventative action to secure the vulcan. I would hate to see her go on her tail!

I might have asked this before but not sure..
What causes the Vulcans stbd engine(s) TO blow out all kinds of oily smoke on her highspeed runs? Vulcans smoke in general but this looks system related.. failed seals etc etc?

I'm assuming you mean XM655 rather than Vulcans in general. I'm not aware of any reason for starboard engines to be consistently more smoky than port.

655's starboard engines are smokier because they are older. Most of the smoke (actually vapourised oil) comes from the delivery casing breather and emerges from the vent under the middle engine door. If the engine were left running at high power it would rapidly dissipate as the oil which has collected in the engine internals burns off. However, because 655 only ever runs at high power for a few seconds, it always seems to be very smoky, although standing under the aircraft I can see that it is reducing even after eight or ten seconds.

This is very different to the brown smoke you see behind XH558, which is exhaust smoke resulting from inefficient combustion in the atomiser combustion system used in the Olympus engine. The brown smoke is mainly oxides of nitrogen.

Development Olympus 593s for Concorde had a similar atomiser combustion system, and development Concordes smoked. Production 593s had a vapouriser combustion system, and production Concordes didn't smoke.
Sooty

One Olympus 301 has twice the power of a complete F1 starting grid.
XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

Thanks Sooty, I thought it might be age related. If it disperses that quickly then it can't be serious.
